- CONSTRUCTION TO BEGIN ON STATE-OF-THE-ART NASCAR PRODUCTIONS FACILITY
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (August 10, 2022) – NASCAR announced today that construction will begin on a brand new state-of-the-art Productions facility later this summer. The 58,000 square-foot facility will be built on the land adjacent to the NASCAR R&D Center in Concord, North Carolina. The new facility will house approximately 125 NASCAR Productions and MRN employees with further room to expand operations in the future. NASCAR will continue to have a significant presence in the Uptown Charlotte area, with a large contingent of employees remaining in Five Fifty South (formerly known as NASCAR Plaza) for the foreseeable future. NASCAR will make significant investments in its productions infrastructure and technology to deliver first-class live event production and content to NASCAR’s fans and industry partners. This commitment furthers NASCAR’s mission of providing fans with enhanced content that brings them closer to the sport. “The scope and scale of the NASCAR Productions business has fundamentally changed in recent years, with NASCAR’s live event production operation more than doubling since 2018. Developing a state-of-the-art facility that can accommodate our continued expansion was paramount,” said Brian Herbst, SVP, Media and Productions. “In this evolving sports media landscape, live event production and investing in technology that enhances the fan viewing experience has never been more important - it’s essential that our new workspace can facilitate that strategic growth.” NASCAR Productions will produce more than 500 live events in 2022, up from 200 live events in 2018. Through a partnership with NEP Group, an industry-leader in delivering solutions for broadcast and live events, the new NASCAR Productions facility will be outfitted with the latest broadcast equipment and software to create high-end production quality and content. The new location is strategically located next to the NASCAR R&D Center and will be more closely situated to a majority of NASCAR team operations. The facility will offer more space and will be a far more efficient resource for the industry at large. Though still in the early stages of development, the new facility is expected to be fully operational by the start of the 2024 season. NASCAR Studios, the sanctioning body’s hub for content strategy, creation and distribution will also have employees based at the new facility in Concord. NASCAR will conduct a ceremonially ground-breaking event on Wednesday, August 31st. More information will be shared as details for the event become finalized.

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (Aug. 9, 2022) – Sam Mayer will return to JR Motorsports and race full-time in the NASCAR Xfinity Series in 2023, the team announced today. The 19-year-old will again pilot the No. 1 Chevrolet in his third consecutive season with JRM. Ninth in the championship standings with only five races remaining before the playoff cutoff, he’s squarely in the hunt on the strength of eight top five and 11 top 10 finishes, including a string of seven top-five efforts in eight races earlier this year. “We’ve seen tremendous growth and maturity from Sam on and off the racetrack,” said Kelley Earnhardt Miller, JRM general manager. “He is consistently running up front, is fast each and every week and provides great visibility for his partners. With all the situational knowledge he’s gained this year, I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do to finish out 2022 and into ’23.” Mayer has tallied nine top fives, 17 top 10s and one pole in 39 starts with JRM. “It’s a good feeling to get this squared away,” said Mayer, a native of Franklin, Wis. “Now we can focus on locking ourselves into the playoffs and getting that first Xfinity win. - Dixon passes Mario Andretti for second all time with Nashville win.
(Photo Credit: @CGRTeams) In the closest finish in IndyCar Series history on a street course, Scott Dixon survives a final charge from Scott McLaughlin to pick up his 53rd win in series history and his second win this season at the Nashville Grand Prix. Now one thing that we must talk about before we get to the biggest two stories coming out of this race was Colton Herta. Herta did make contact in turn seven on lap three forcing him to change his front wing and go a lap down. He made a very good rebound and finished inside the top five. Much like last week when Alexander Rossi's car was impounded after the Indy GP, Herta's car is undergoing the same fate as of writing. If any punishment comes down from IndyCar in the coming days, stay tuned to my Twitter account, @TheCollinBest for more information. Our first of the two big stories from Nashville is the incident between Josef Newgarden and Romain Grosjean on lap 76. Going into turn eleven coming off a restart, Newgarden went to the inside of Grosjean to make a move inside the top five of the race. From the video evidence, it looked liked Newgarden ran wide and pushed Grosjean into the wall. Obviously Grosjean was visibly upset as he waited for Newgarden on the following caution laps and showed his displeasure. But when Newgarden was asked about it after the race, he blamed the product of street course racing and said what he did was fair. As the season is rapidly winding down, our second biggest story coming out of the race is the championship battle that is nearing an exciting conclusion. Only 33 points separate five drivers as only have three races left in the 2022 season. For Alexander Rossi and Felix Rosenqvist, their results today have effectively eliminated from championship contention as it has become a mathematical impossibility to win the championship. For McLaughlin and Pato O'Ward, they do need a lot of help to get back into the hunt but it might come to a close following Gateway. For the top five, the next two races will have huge implications as it seems the title will come between Power and Dixon. With three races left: Will Power - 450 Scott Dixon: - 6 Marcus Ericsson: - 12 Josef Newgarden: - 22 Alex Palou: -33 For IndyCar, the series takes a week off as they prepare for the final oval race of the season at Gateway Motorsports Park on Saturday, August 20th. You can catch the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 at 6:00 P.M. EST on the USA Network. For more IndyCar news and opinion, you can listen to Early Apex tomorrow. I had a tech issue that prevented me from recording last week.
- NHRA DRAG RACING RETURNS TO FAMED ROUTE 66 RACEWAY FOR THIS WEEKEND’S LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES
Wire / NHRA INDIANAPOLIS (Aug. 5, 2022) – For the first time since 2019 there will be drag racing at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill., as the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series returns to the track for this weekend’s Division 3 race. It marks the first racing action at the popular facility in three years, with more than 400 cars expected to take part in an event that starts on Friday and runs through Sunday. The North Central Division race will feature a full slate of sportsman racing and some of the top drivers in the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, including standouts in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car, with each team excited to return to the standout Chicago-area facility. “There’s so much excitement for this weekend and the passion that has been displayed by the staff and management at Route 66 has been truly impressive,” North Central Division Director William Tharpe said. “We’ve all dedicated a lot of time to this event, and we want everything to go well. We all have the same mindset and want to relish and enjoy this weekend and put our best foot forward.” Longtime NHRA announcer Alan Reinhart is set to call the action this weekend from Route 66 Raceway. He worked with local media outlets to promote the event leading into the weekend and jumped at the opportunity to be a part of NHRA’s first race at the track since the 2019 campaign. “I’m really looking forward to returning to Route 66 Raceway this weekend for the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event,” Reinhart said. “William Tharpe and everyone at Route 66 put a lot of effort into making this happen. After working four straight weekends, this was supposed to be a weekend off, but when William called me, I jumped at the offer. The chance to return to Chicago was worth it and we’re all excited about the weekend.” Racing begins at 9 a.m. each day, with Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car qualifying at 5 p.m. on Friday, and 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday, leading directly into eliminations. Eliminations continue at 9 a.m. on Sunday. Beginning last year, Tharpe and his team looked into hosting at a divisional race at Route 66 Raceway, which first opened in 1998 and played host to NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series events for more than 20 years, making several visits to the track. He worked closely with the track to put a plan into place to host an event for the first time in three years and Tharpe is excited about the possibilities for this weekend and for the future. “The engagement and response from people has been great,” Tharpe said. “It’s a shot in the arm for local businesses, too, and really everyone in the area. Knowing there’s a venue like this out there, we wanted to do what we could to help get it back open and show the current owners and management team what we could offer. Hopefully we can provide a great service to this market and put on a thrilling show this weekend.” ***
- Night Under Fire, an American Tradition Fueled By Speed and Sparks
On the day of Summit Motorsports Park's most recent National event, long-time track owner Bill Bader Sr. passed away. Many members of the media and the fans in the grandstands were not made aware of the news until the following day. Meanwhile, some of the insiders in the world of drag racing were mourning while competing at 'America's Track'. The event carried on. Round after round of exhilarating racing took place in the wake of tragic news, and only a matter of days after the loss of motorsports philanthropist Bruton Smith passed in Charlotte. The sport was injured. As Robert Hight and Erica Enders successfully extended their winning trends, the Bader family dealt with the painful steps of losing their patriarch. Mr. Bader's favourite event each year was arguably 'Night Under Fire', a semi-pro event for the regions greatest racers, and an exhibition for names such as John Force and Ron Capps. Bader and his son worked 44 consecutive Night Under Fire events prior to this passing. The planning for the famed event continued through loss. Bader Jr. addressed the media and lead drivers Saturday morning and showed unusual energy not always expressed. He was somber and soft. He was sincere and simple. "There has never been a Night Under Fire that I’ve anticipated in 45 years more than today. It isn’t for financial gain or money, it is because it is the first Night under Fire without my dad. We want you to all be a part of this special event. - Bill Bader Jr. He reviewed every detail of the day with the folks responsible for ensuring his track's fans had an exceptional entertainment experience. The room was silent. NHRA legends, track officials, family, friends, they honoured Bader Jr. with their fullest of attention. Bill Bader Sr. was highlighted by several of the racers through the day's event in various ways. Many included kind words of the late business owner in their interviews, while others offered stickers and messages on their cars. Each of the varying vehicle classes took to center stage and had their opportunity to practice or qualify. The venue pre-sold nearly 30,000 according to sources at the track, but by the time racing began it was announced to have been nearly 40,000 spectators....and they were still shuffling in after eight o'clock. There were headlining acts greater than usual such as Bob Motz' jet truck, and top fuel NHRA legends John Force and Ron Capps, but the locals were able to benefit from a winning prize as well. Over 100 racers who had competed at Summit in the past were invited to compete for a $75,000 grand prize. After qualifying for the event had taken place, an exceptionally patriotic introduction of nearly an hour entertained the nations most patriotic fans. Mr. Bader Jr. was proud. He mentioned his love for the nation and God on several occasions and the fans cheered. A series of 1940's T-34 show planes from the Hooligan's flight team. He ended his introduction using language that was strong..."If you don't believe this nation is the greatest in the world, you can get the hell out and I"ll be happy to refund your tickets." The racing began under a beautiful sunset. Top fuel qualifying mostly headlined early round racing and the drivers held nothing back. John Force claimed the pole and fans instantly reacted. Speeds well into the 300's dominated, which was unexpected by some early on. Force's crew chief Jimmy Prock shared with Racing Refresh that they were always looking for more information on their cars when able to do match racing. Round after round of elimination drag racing took place with entertainment fueled by fire between each set. The jet cars competed and Norwalk's favourite Bob Motz Jet Truck. The truck, which he's fielded in events for over 30 years stunned new fans, while renewing long-tenured racing vows with tenured spectators. Clouds over 100 feet of smoke and hot fire cleared the pit area and staging lane. Racing resumed under a patriotic theme. Bill Bader Jr. emceed for hours, regularly honouring American traditions as the DJ played a variety of music styles. His cadence stopped only for brief water breaks. Adorned in red and white tuxedos, Bader and his team wanted the event to be both fun and fancy. As the evening winded down, top fuel nitro cars continued to steal the show. Each of the nationally ranked drivers made their last passes. In the finals Alexis DeJoria defeated John Force. Current Funny Car points leader Robert Hight ran a Monster Energy decal on his vehicle's sides and ran several passes over 300mph. Other finalists in the Funny Car class included veteran racing legend Ron Capps, Dale Creasy Jr., and Cruz Pedregon. The event ended with a lengthy fireworks display presented by Cornwell Tools. Night Under Fire 2022 will be remembered as one of the most iconic annual 'Fire' events in recent years. For more photos and videos from the Night Under Fire event visit Twitter.com/RacingRefresh.

With the win, the eighth straight at the track for Ford drivers, he is likely to qualify for the NASCAR Cup Series Playoff. Harvick is the only driver to have earned a postseason spot every year since the current elimination format was introduced in 2014, the same year he won his series title. “Everybody who doubted us doesn’t know us,” said Harvick, who led 38 laps on Sunday, 25 more than he had led in the previous 22 races combined. “They, obviously, know we thrive in these types of situations. And a lot of things went our way today, which we haven't had all year long—have things go our way and have things fall our way. “And then there at the end we pitted, didn't go a lap down, and the caution came out, got control of the race. That's the thing I struggled with the most today was traffic and the restarts and just having to make up ground. Once I got clear track, that baby was hunting.” As Harvick indicated, the race broke his way. The driver of the No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford brought his car to pit road on Lap 158 for a green-flag stop. A lap later, NASCAR called the seventh caution of the afternoon when Ross Chastain’s Chevrolet and Christopher Bell’s Toyota collided in Turn 4. Harvick remained on the lead lap and inherited the top spot when the contending cars ahead of him pitted under the yellow. With Wallace bottled up behind Joey Logano’s Ford after the Lap 166 restart, Harvick opened a gap of more than four seconds in clean air and cruised to his first win since Sept. 19, 2020 at Bristol. Wallace was disconsolate as he replayed the final restart in his head. “Just replaying everything I could have done,” said Wallace, who led twice for 22 laps. “Took the top there on the restart. Thought I could hang with the 4 (Harvick), and just got to racing the 5 (Kyle Larson) and the 22 (Logano). And 22 did a good job of getting another Ford contract, helping a Ford win. “Just all in all an incredible weekend. Appreciate my team. Wished we could have got Toyota in the Victory Lane. Wish we got (sponsor) McDonald's back in victory lane. She was fast all week, man. Just I'll wear this one on my heart for a while. I failed everybody.” Denny Hamlin finished third in arguably the fastest car in the race. On his final pit stop under caution on Lap 160, Hamlin incurred a penalty for too many men over the wall when his crew corralled a runaway tire from an adjacent pit stall. Hamlin restarted 22nd and charged to third, 3.910 seconds behind the race winner. Logano came home fourth, followed by Team Penske teammate Ryan Blaney. Martin Truex Jr., Larson, Erik Jones, Alex Bowman and Ty Gibbs (subbing for injured Kurt Busch) completed the top 10. The race was delayed just over an hour due to inclement weather. That didn’t deter the fans in the grandstands, the largest crowd at Michigan International Speedway since 2016. In addition, infield camping was sold out for the weekend for the first time since 2012. Blaney now leads Truex by 19 points for the final Playoff berth, which will be determined on points if there are no additional unique winners in the next three races. An early nine-car accident in Turn 2 eliminated two of the top five qualifiers—Kyle Busch and Austin Cindric. Moments after a restart on Lap 25, J.J. Yeley’s No. 15 Ford got loose, checked up and turned sideways in the middle of the pack. In the ensuing melee, Cindric’s No. 2 Ford crashed nose-first into the outside wall and Buch’s No. 18 Toyota also sustained terminal damage. The cars of Yeley, Almirola, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and rookie Harrison Burton also were knocked out of the race. “Just chaos ensued on the restart there, and I don’t know what started it, but the 10 (Almirola) got spun in front of me, and then I got wedged between him and the wall,” said Busch, who had elected to pit on Lap 22 under a competition called because of a rainstorm that delayed the start of the race. “When you get back there, things happen on restarts, especially when you have guys that stayed out and don’t have tires versus those that have four tires. Was not really in a hurry and knew we were coming to stage points in another 40 laps or so and it was going to be a long run to get there—and then we all just crashed.” NASCAR Cup Series Race - 54th Annual FireKeepers Casino 400 Michigan International Speedway Brooklyn, Michigan Sunday, August 7, 2022 1. - Erik Jones Foundation Marks One-Year Anniversary with Donation to Melanoma Research Foundation
BROOKLYN, Mich. (Aug. 7, 2022) – It was a year ago when NASCAR Cup Series driver Erik Jones launched his own charitable foundation in his home state of Michigan. Today, with Jones back in the Great Lake State to race at Michigan International Speedway in the FireKeepers Casino 400, the Erik Jones Foundation proudly made a $20,000 donation to the Melanoma Research Foundation (MRF) , the largest independent organization devoted to melanoma. Encouraging early cancer detection and care is one of the three pillars of the Erik Jones Foundation, along with advocating for literacy and promoting animal welfare. But cancer detection and care have been a priority for Jones since his father, Dave, succumbed to the disease in 2016. “In February of 2016, my dad was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma, and four months later he was gone,” said the 26-year-old Jones. “Even with radiation and immunotherapy, the cancer spread. It was pretty aggressive. And what I’ve learned since then is how important early detection is, because the sooner you diagnose it, the more options you have for treatment. “That’s how I got to know the Melanoma Research Foundation. They’re committed to supporting the medical research necessary to develop effective treatments and, ideally, a cure for melanoma. They also advocate for the melanoma community and educate patients, caregivers, and the general public about prevention, awareness, diagnosis and treatment. It’s a cause that’s pretty important to me, so when we had our first fundraiser, I wanted the MRF to be the beneficiary.” On May 19 at Birch Run (Mich.) Speedway, located 40 miles north from Jones’ hometown of Byron, the Erik Jones Foundation held its first fundraising event, 3 Reasons to Race. Through a unique race-gaming experience where guests could win cash and prizes, along with a 50/50 raffle and silent auction that featured mementos from NASCAR personalities, $20,000 was raised for MRF to support mission critical research and educational resources. Cheryl Stratos, an MRF board member and stage four melanoma survivor, accepted the check from the Erik Jones Foundation. “It cannot be overstated how important donations like this one from the Erik Jones Foundation are to life-saving research and drug development,” said Stratos, who received her diagnosis in November 2009. “I am here today because of the work of so many people. I enrolled in a phase one clinical trial at UCLA and it saved my life. But the amount of money and work it takes to even have a clinical trial is staggering. That’s why this donation, and this moment, where Erik and I can advocate for prevention, early cancer detection and care, is so valuable. There’s someone today who is in the same position I was back in 2009 who will benefit from the efforts made by Erik and his foundation with this donation to the MRF.” Committed to the support of medical research and education, MRF is a dedicated advocate for the melanoma community, helping to raise awareness of this disease and the need for a cure. MRF’s website, www.melanoma.org , is the premier source for melanoma information. MRF can also be found on Facebook , Twitter , Instagram , YouTube and TikTok . In addition to raising funds for MRF, Jones has raised awareness. During this year’s Coca-Cola 600 on Memorial Day weekend at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway, Jones partnered with MRF and local dermatologists to promote sunscreen use. Before racing his No. 43 FOCUSfactor Chevrolet Camaro for Petty GMS , which sports an Erik Jones Foundation logo this weekend at Michigan to commemorate its one-year anniversary, Jones joined members of his foundation and distributed 10,000 travel-sized sunscreen containers to fans while encouraging them to schedule annual exams with their dermatologist. “You can’t just talk about it, you have to go and do it,” Jones said. “That’s why I started the foundation. I wanted to find a way to do more on a larger scale. We’re only a year into it and I already feel like we’re making an impact. But the truth is, we’re just getting started.” The foundation’s first gift was a donation last June to the Genesee District Library, a public library system with 19 locations serving the residents of Genesee County, Michigan. It was an extension of Jones’ #READwithErik series, which began in the spring of 2020 when COVID-19 forced NASCAR to take a 10-week break and schools transitioned to remote learning. Jones saw an opportunity to share his passion for reading and the first #READwithErik event took place on April 21, 2020 when he sat down in front of a camera and read Dr. Seuss’ iconic “Oh, The Places You’ll Go” via his Facebook page . Since its debut, #READwithErik has featured 70 books – 50 dedicated to youths with 20 other featured titles geared toward adults – all of which have generated more than 200,000 views and a reach in excess of 430,000. In the past year as COVID-19 restrictions eased, Jones has been able to take his #READwithErik series from the digital realm to in-person gatherings. He has read to students in the campgrounds at NASCAR venues, with his first in-person reading coming last August at Michigan where Jones read “M is for Mitten: A Michigan Alphabet” by Annie Appleford, to kids and their families at the Graves Family Campground. Subsequent visits have included Estrella Vista STEM Academy for Engineering in Avondale, Arizona, last November, where the Erik Jones Foundation donated 100 books to the school library, and Celeste Henkel Elementary School in Statesville, North Carolina, earlier this year where Jones read another Dr. Seuss classic, “The Cat in the Hat”. Jones returned to an at-track campground event in May during the Southern 500 race weekend at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway, reading “Back Roads, Country Toads” by Devin Scillian and illustrated by Tim Bowers to kids and their families. Most recently, Jones joined author Neal Thompson on a panel hosted by North Carolina Humanities on June 23 at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, North Carolina, that discussed Thompson’s book, “Driving with the Devil: Southern Moonshine, Detroit Wheels and the Birth of NASCAR” . - NXS Race Recap: Ty Gibbs picks up ninth career NASCAR Xfinity win at Michigan
By Reid Spencer NASCAR Wire Service Taking control of the race in the final stage, Ty Gibbs sped to his NASCAR Xfinity Series-best fifth victory of the season in Saturday’s New Holland 250 at Michigan International Speedway. The tenor of the race changed markedly near the end of the second stage when pole winner Noah Gragson opted to stay on the track and compete for the stage win on the high-speed 2.0-mile track. Gibbs had pitted under caution on Lap 55 and inherited the lead when Gragson and others who had stayed out until the completion of the stage came to pit road during the stage break. The race ran caution-free from the final restart Lap 68 to the finish on Lap 125, and Gibbs beat runner-up Justin Allgaier to the stripe by 1.160 seconds. Gragson worked his way up to third but trailed Gibbs by 2.472 seconds at the finish. “I think this type of racing shows the strategy in the pit stops,” said Gibbs, who led twice for a race-high 54 laps, matching the number of his No. 54 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota. “My guys did such a great job. I work out with them during the week, so I see how hard they work. They do a great job—every one of them. “So I'm very thankful and glad to be part of the organization that motivates me like that week in and week out—not motivates, because that's temporary—but being relentless, and I feel like that's what they showed me.” The victory was Gibbs first at Michigan and the ninth in 39 Xfinity Series starts for a remarkable winning percentage of 23.08. Allgaier opted for the same strategy as Gibbs, but a slow green-flag pit stop on Lap 100 cost him a chance to compete for the win. “I pitted to try and get clear of some lapped cars, and, unfortunately, we merged back on the race track right behind those same lapped cars, right before they made their pit stops,” Allgaier said. “So not only did we have to contend with getting by them, as soon as we got by them, they all pitted. “Second place is tough, but my daughter’s birthday’s on Monday, so we’ll celebrate, even though it’s second.” Gragson’s No. 9 JR Motorsports Chevrolet arguably was the fastest car in the race, but strategy and the absence of cautions in the final stage doomed his prospects. “We won the first stage and then had a caution with about five to go in the second stage and opted to stay out, won the second stage (by .035 seconds of AJ Allmendinger),” Gragson said. “Then just flipped. “Restarted the third stage 12th, and that kind of hurt us there at the end, but overall good day for our Bass Pro Shops, Black Rifle Camaro. We were running him down—just needed more laps there at the end.” Brandon Jones and Austin Hill finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Josh Berry, Allmendinger, Daniel Hemric, Riley Herbst and Landon Cassill completed the top 10. --30-- NASCAR Xfinity Series Race - 30th Annual New Holland 250 Michigan International Speedway Brooklyn, Michigan Saturday, August 6, 2022 1. - Racing Refresh Tech Tuesday: NHRA Top Fuel Dragsters
(Image via NHRA) When it comes to speed in motorsports, you look no further than the NHRA. When it comes to power, the first thing you think of is it's Top Fuel dragster category. With speeds well above 300 miles per hour, for thirty-seven drivers in the 2022 NHRA Top Fuel division, each pass is four seconds of high octane power. In this edition of Tech Tuesday, we will look at the science and engineering of the Top Fuel power plant that makes these machines the fastest in the world. In short, a Top Fuel Dragster is powered by 500 cubic-inch engine that is forged of one piece of solid aluminum that has a power output of over 11,000 horsepower. Which is equal to fifteen IndyCar engines worth of power. The acceleration of these engines is mind boggling that it can go from a standing start to 100 miles per hour in 0.8 seconds. With speeds like that, drivers can experience up to four times the force of gravity on the start which is more than Space Shuttle astronauts experienced at launch. There is no words in the English language that can describe the incredible power that these cars can produce. Based of the second generation of a V8 engine that dates back to 1964 with the Chrysler RB Hemi. The engine uses a two-valve hemispherical design which is also machined from aluminum. With large valves and the hemispherical design, holds on to heat produced by combustion more efficiently which allows a very high fuel to air ratio that can produce power. But the engine alone doesn't just produce all of the power. The engine is aided by Roots blower supercharger that has the ability to spin at 12,000 revolutions a minute and provides up to 66 pounds of intake pressure and moves up to 3,000 cubic feet per minute is forced into the cylinder to aid the combustion process. To create this power, you need spark plugs. Each cylinder has two spark plugs and are powered by two 44 amp magnetos. Which is the same amount of power that tig welders use to operate. By the end of one run, the spark plugs can actually weld together. But air is just part of the combustion process. To need fire, you need air and a fuel source to create it. That's where nitromethane comes in to play. Nitromethane or "nitro" for short, is a chemical that has less oxygen than your road car in order to burn more efficiently. In a street car, it takes 2.2 pounds of gasoline with 32 pounds of air in order to have it's most efficient burn. With nitro, 1 pound of nitromethane with 3.7 pounds of air is in order to burn at its most efficient point. This is because it carries its own oxygen in the molecular bonds. Because of this, the fuel injectors can inject 1.2 gallons per second of fuel to power the engine. Also, because there is no radiator in Top Fuel cars, the nitromethane is used to cool the engines until the car runs out of fuel. On a normal run through the burnout to the end of a quarter-mile run, it can use up to 23 gallons of fuel. Now how do we delivered that power to the track. Well, like most engines it is from the transmission and the clutch. Unlike gears on a Formula One car, NHRA Top Fuel cars are direct drive and use a centrifugal clutch to deliver power. The clutch is made up of a system of timers, levers, and clutch disks that use centrifugal force to throw clutch fingers outward. As they do that they engage more disks until all six are engaged. By the end of the run, all six are welded together due to friction as temperatures can rise up to 3700 degrees. This concludes another edition of Tech Tuesday. Next weekend, we will be taking a in-depth look at the suspension system of an IndyCar. For Henry.
