  • Larson Locked Into the Championship 4 With Las Vegas Win

By Adam Carabine & Crystal Clay LAS VEGAS - The first spot of the Championship 4 was filled on Sunday, as Kyle Larson won the South Point 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Larson’s victory, his fourth of the season, came at the first race of the Round of 8, punching his ticket to the final race for the NASCAR Championship in Phoenix. On paper, it might look like Larson dominated the race. He led 133 laps, the most of any driver, and swept both stages. However, it was anything but a cakewalk. Larson thought that the Next-Gen Cup car played a role in that. “Whatever it is about the next-gen car, I’m sure it was just an accident when they built it - I don’t mean that negatively - but I don’t think anybody can draw a car up to where you’re almost at a disadvantage while leading,” he said. “With the next-gen car, the leader just has so much more load with the clean air on your car that you wear out the right rear tire so much faster. That’s why the leader always gets loose. It just makes the racing really tight, because the leader has his hands full after 15-20 laps and can’t really get away. That’s what I was fighting with in the end.” There was also a wild save off of turn 2 in the second stage. His back end started to spin out, tagged the wall with his right rear, and was somehow able to correct it and continue on. “I was getting really loose at that point. It’s so bumpy in 1 and 2, that when you are loose, it makes it even worse coming across those bumps. I got a little out of shape, had a moment, and thought I had it saved. It just stepped out really quick.” Crew chief Cliff Daniels was asked about the save and said, “Huge credit to [Larson], it was a ridiculous save.” On a scale of 1-10, he mentioned that while everyone would likely give it a 10, he gave it a 9.4. “If he wants a 10, well don’t hit the wall!” he said with a laugh. In the closing moments of the race, Larson’s lead over 2nd-placed finisher Christopher Bell got up to 1.5 seconds, but Bell was determined. Over the final 20 laps, Bell closed in steadily. Eventually Larson held on, but the gap was only 0.082 seconds. Hendrick Motorsports Vice Chairman Jeff Gordon was on the edge of his seat, saying “My gosh what a nail-biter in those last few laps. You saw Bell really working the outside lane.” With his win today, Larson can worry a bit less over the next two races at Homestead-Miami and Martinsville, as he is locked into the Final Four. While his four wins this year is less than the 10 he earned over his 2021 Championship-winning season, Larson said that this year feels quite similar. “I know in the win column it doesn’t show that, but in sheer speed and stuff, I feel like we’ve been very similar to where we were in 2021. We’ve probably contended for as many wins as we did then. It’s just, these next-gen races are tougher to win. Thankfully we’re in position like we were in 2021, and hopefully we can cap it off like we did then too.” Cliff Daniels took it a step further, saying, “I think as a team, we’re significantly stronger [than 2021]. Results don’t show it at all. The reason I say that is we’ve had two more years to gel together, to work together - the chemistry has only gotten stronger. The two years under our belt, mixed with such a volatile season that we’ve had, I think our team is in a very, very strong position right now.” Note: Ryan Blaney's No. 12 failed post-race inspection. His left front shock did not meet the overall specified length. Playoff cut-line after the South Point 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway: Kyle Larson: ADV William Byron: +11 Denny Hamlin: +4 Martin Truex Jr.: +3 - - - - - - Christopher Bell: -3 Tyler Reddick: -16 Chris Buescher: -23 Ryan Blaney: -56

  • Riley Herbst's Long-Awaited First Win Comes at Home

By Crystal Clay and Adam Carabine LAS VEGAS –The Herbst family and city of Las Vegas welcomed their own into Victory Lane at Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the Alsco Uniforms 302. In his 139th attempt, Riley Herbst finally won his first Xfinity Series race in front of 60 close family members and friends. “This is a huge win off my shoulders, I’m just so relieved to be here in victory lane, and in my home city.” Herbst, driver of the No. 98 Monster Energy Ford for Stewart-Haas Racing, set a new Xfinity Series record on Saturday. Not only was it his first career win in any of the three national touring NASCAR series, but his 14.959-second margin of victory over points leader John Hunter Nemechek is the biggest in Xfinity Series history. “When you’re in your darkest days, there’s nobody around you besides your mom. That’s her job, and she was the best at it. There’s many times when you just don’t know, and she’s the only one there to pick you up. I wouldn’t be here without her.” Post-race, he was visibly excited. “We just beat everybody in the playoffs, trying to go to Phoenix - they all brought their best stuff, and we whooped ‘em by about 10 seconds! Everybody said I can’t do it, couldn’t do it, won’t win, not good enough… I just flat-out just beat ‘em!” Herbst had a solid qualifying effort, starting the race in the 8th position, but his dominance really started in the late moments of Stage 2. On the final lap of the stage, Herbst passed his SHR teammate Cole Custer to take the lead. Custer wound up at the front on the ensuing restart, but Herbst was not to be denied. The “Battle Born” Vegas native took the lead back 8 laps later, and never looked back. Aside from cycling through green flag pit stops, Herbst led the field for 103 laps through to the checkered flag. Cole Custer, to his credit, played the good teammate after the race, saying “I’m so pumped for Riley, he worked so hard at it. They’ve had a rough year, and to have him win at his home track is pretty awesome for his first win,” after a third-place finish. The Alsco Uniforms 302 had a rocky start, with two cautions coming in the first 14 laps. Later in the second stage, Kaz Grala had an engine failure at an inopportune time, resulting in a red flag to clean up fluid. The wreck cost six drivers their day, with four of them leaving the race. The final stage remained green for the final 105 laps, contributing to both Herbst’s record-setting lead, and a lead lap with only ten drivers. A late-race caution could have ruined everything. “I didn’t want something funny to happen, but at that same time I knew I couldn’t control anyone else’s cars,” said Herbst. “If there was a caution, I was going to have to take it at face value.” In victory lane, Riley Herbst was given a huge hug by his mother, and the emotion was clear on his face. “When you’re in your darkest days, there’s nobody around you besides your mom. That’s her job, and she was the best at it. There’s many times when you just don’t know, and she’s the only one there to pick you up. I wouldn’t be here without her.” As for a home town celebration in Sin City? Herbst said: “We’re gonna go watch my Trojans beat up on Notre Dame, and then we’re going to drink!”

  • Matt Kenseth Joins LEGACY MOTOR CLUB™ as a Competition Advisor

Press Release | LEGACY MOTOR CLUB STATESVILLE, N.C. (October 10, 2023) -- LEGACY MOTOR CLUB™ today announced 2023 NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee and 2003 Winston Cup Series Champion Matt Kenseth as a Competition Advisor. In this role, Kenseth will provide guidance and strategy on the competition side, serving as a mentor to drivers Erik Jones and John Hunter Nemechek, as well as assisting the Club throughout its transition to Toyota for the 2024 season. “Jimmie and I have so much respect for each other as both competitors and friends – we are alike in many ways and at similar points in our careers,” said Kenseth. “This is a great opportunity for me to be a resource for two extremely talented drivers and help on the racing operations side with this transition to Toyota. I’m really looking forward to seeing what we can accomplish together.” Club co-owners Johnson and Maury Gallagher are optimistic about the alliance with Kenseth. As history goes, Johnson and Kenseth’s 2013 NASCAR Cup Series chase to the championship featured a spirited battle between the two drivers. Kenseth won seven races during that season – as opposed to Johnson’s six wins – but after chasing each other for several weeks - including a tie for the points lead leaving Martinsville Speedway - Kenseth finished second in the standings as Johnson won his sixth career title. “Not only is Matt an excellent driver and a fierce competitor, he’s also a great friend,” Johnson said. “This alliance makes so much sense. Matt is extremely smart, has worked with Toyota while racing for Joe Gibbs Racing, and is still as competitive as ever. He’s a natural-born athlete and as fit as I have ever seen him. I’m so glad he is willing to share his knowledge and experience with us, and we look forward to all Matt has to offer.” Kenseth, who stepped away from full-time competition in 2020 has stayed busy with family, competing in the 2022 Boston Marathon where he finished with a time of 3:01:40, and celebrating his 2023 NASCAR Hall of Fame induction. Over the course of his 20-year Cup Series career, Kenseth had 39 victories at 19 different tracks and won the 2003 NASCAR Cup Series Championship. Kenseth is a two-time DAYTONA 500 champion, the 2000 Rookie of the Year, a Southern 500 winner, a Coca-Cola 600 winner, and the 2004 International Race of Champions (IROC) champion. He qualified for the “NASCAR Playoffs” in 13 of 14 seasons attempted. In addition to his 39 wins, Kenseth recorded 182 top-five and 331 top-10 finishes in 697 starts, as well as 20 pole position awards. Kenseth and Joey Cohen, LEGACY MOTOR CLUB’s vice president of racing operations, worked together at Roush Racing when Cohen was an engineer for the team. “Matt is going to help make this transition to Toyota smooth,” said Cohen. “He is one of the best drivers out there, and even though he is no longer behind the wheel, his perspective and advice will be crucial heading into next season for both our drivers and crews.” Kenseth will assume the role within LEGACY MOTOR CLUB immediately. • 2024 NASCAR Chicago Street Race Weekend Returns to Grant Park with NASCAR Cup and Xfinity Series

Press Release | CHICAGO STREET RACE CHICAGO (Oct. 4, 2023) – Following the success of the inaugural event, NASCAR today announced that Chicago will welcome the NASCAR Cup Series back to Grant Park on Sunday July 7, 2024 at 4:30 pm ET/3:30 pm CT, with the NASCAR Xfinity Series set to return on Saturday, July 6, 2024 at 2:30 pm ET/1:30 pm CT, with both races broadcast on NBC for the first time. In addition to the 2024 return announcement, Choose Chicago and the Chicago Sports Commission released the findings of their independent economic impact report, which showed that the inaugural Chicago Street Race Weekend exceeded initial economic forecasts despite historic rains, delivering a total economic impact of $108.9 million for Chicago from corporate spending and non-local attendees who said that the Chicago Street Race was their sole or primary reason for travel. This is in addition to another estimated $6.2 million in economic investment from attendees who said that the event was equally important as other attractions in their decision to travel to Chicago. “From the very beginning, our objective was to drive global attention and tourism to Chicago while introducing motorsports to an entirely new fan base, and by both measures, 2023 was a resounding success,” said Julie Giese, Chicago Street Race President. “NASCAR is honored to be a part of the Chicago community 365-days a year, and we look forward to building upon the incredible foundation we established this year.” 2024 will mark the second of a minimum three-year commitment between NASCAR and the City of Chicago. As a part of the overall 2024 NASCAR schedule announcement for its three national series (Cup Series, Xfinity Series, and NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series), NASCAR will return to the Second City for the second-ever Street Race in Cup Series history alongside Founding Partners McDonald’s, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois to help anchor another landmark season for the sport and mark the next installment of a new Chicago Fourth of July tradition. The 2023 Chicago Street Race Weekend helped drive the highest hotel revenue for Fourth of July Weekend – which traditionally lags behind other summer weekends – since 2015, and brought in more than $8.3 million in state and local taxes while supporting 750 jobs. “Last year’s event was both a short-term and long-term economic boon for the city, with a tremendous influx of visitors in 2023, and years of continued tourism potential from the millions of NASCAR viewers who watched at home,” said Kara Bachman, Executive Director of the Chicago Sports Commission. “The fact that NASCAR was able to deliver on the economic impact goals they set despite once-in-a-generation flooding speaks not only to the level of demand for NASCAR in Chicago, but also our continued ability as a city to successfully host big events like this.” According to the economic impact report, 52% of 2023 racegoers travelled to the race from outside of the city, spending money in local restaurants, shops, and hotels as a result. 77% of these visitors, who hailed from all 50 states and 15 countries, said they would recommend Chicago as a travel destination going forward, and 64% of last year’s visitors said that they plan on returning to Chicago for another vacation in the future. “Thanks to our partners at NASCAR, thousands of tourists from across the globe witnessed first-hand the best of what Chicago has to offer,” said Lynn Osmond, President and CEO of Choose Chicago. “As we look to the future of tourism in this city, what’s equally exciting is the millions of viewers who watched this magnificent two-day television advertisement for our city, and will have the 2024 Chicago Street Race Weekend circled on their calendars.” In addition to the overall economic impact, the weekend-long national television broadcast delivered another $23.6 million in total media value to Chicago, the equivalent of three 30-second Super Bowl ads for the city. The 2023 NASCAR Chicago Street Race’s Grant Park 220 was the most watched NBC race broadcast since 2017 and was the most-streamed NASCAR race in NBC Sports history (163,500). Beyond race weekend, NASCAR has remained committed to Chicago on a year-round basis, with a dedicated office of more than a dozen full-time staff who live, work, and volunteer in the community. In Chicago, NASCAR is actively working to ensure that its presence in the community continues to deliver benefits to local residents, particularly Chicago’s youth and local business community through partnerships with organizations like the Boys & Girls Club, Chicago Public Schools, Art Institute, After School Matters, All Kids Bike, and more.
