- Countdown to Daytona - 10 Days
(Cover Photo Credit: Mike Mulholland/Getty Images) By Adam Carabine In case you missed it, StatChat is counting down the days ‘til the 2023 Daytona 500. Every two days, we will have a new article featuring one of the 36 charters of 2022. 5th Place – Denny Hamlin – 2,378 pts JOE GIBBS RACING – TOYOTA 444 Less Points in 2022 Than in 2021 – Of the entire roster of full-time Cup Series charter drivers who were also driving in 2021, Denny Hamlin had the worst turnaround. He scored 444 less points than in ’21, which ranks him 2nd only behind Kurt Busch (who missed 16 races). Many of his stats were not completely terrible, but the most important one is points. It may have come down to a “Hail Melon” to knock him from the Final 4, but Hamlin could have made his life a lot easier if he’d been a bit more consistent collecting points. 9 Top 5s in 2022 – While his nine Top 5s are more than William Byron’s five, nine is actually the LOWEST number of Top 5s that Denny Hamlin has scored since 2014! His Top 10 numbers were lacking in 2022 as well – as he only scored 16. (Compare that to 2021’s 25 Top 10s). The new Next-Gen car was meant to even the playing field, but it seems that Hamlin caught the worst of it, especially with the Toyotas seeming to be a step behind the others. 624 Laps Led in 2022 – An indicator of what a strange season it was for Denny Hamlin is how many laps he led. His 624 in 2022 ranked 8th of all Cup Series charters, which is a solid number. The finishes just weren’t there. And as you’ve surely read in this series before, there’s only really one lap that matters, the final one. Hamlin acknowledges that his team struggled on pit road, racking up penalties at inopportune times. This may have contributed to him not being able to close out more races. +431 Pass Differential in 2022 – What’s surprising about this statistical category is just how much better Denny Hamlin was in this area than in 2021. His ’21 Pass Differential was still a positive one, but only +174. Again, maybe this speaks to issues on pit road, meaning Denny has to consistently be restarting farther back in the field. He might be able to pass a bunch more cars by virtue of starting farther back, but ultimately he’s not able to make it all the way to P1. 5 DNFs in 2022 – Again, another anomaly in Denny Hamlin’s season was the number of DNFs he had. Five is the highest number of DNFs Hamlin has scored since his worst ever statistical season in 2013. In 2021, he managed to not have a single DNF the entire season. However, at the end of the day, Hamlin still nearly made the Championship 4, had it not been for Ross Chastain. Hamlin knows how to turn it on when the pressure rises. Denny Hamlin has been in the No. 11 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing since the very beginning of his Cup Series career. He’s never driven for another team in Cup in 614 races. That tradition will continue in 2023, as Hamlin will return to JGR and continue driving the 11. Coming up next in the Countdown to Daytona series – Chase Elliott! Press Release | AUTO CLUB SPEEDWAY FONTANA, Calif. (Feb. 9, 2023) – Guitar legend Don Felder already has his name secured in the rock and roll history books as the co-writer of “Hotel California.” On Sunday, Feb. 26, he’ll make NASCAR history as the final pre-race performer at Auto Club Speedway’s 2-mile oval. The track announced today that Felder will perform a full concert in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Fan Zone prior to the Pala Casino 400. The former lead guitarist of The Eagles and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer will fire up the crowd before the stars of the NASCAR Cup Series compete for the final time on the legendary track. “Don Felder is recognized in rock and roll history as an integral member of one of the most popular bands of our time,” said Auto Club Speedway President Dave Allen. “We look forward to welcoming Don Felder to perform for our race fans to get them ready for the Pala Casino 400.” In 2023, Felder finds himself most decidedly back in the driver’s seat with the release of his first solo album in seven years, “American Rock ’N’ Roll” (BMG). The NASCAR weekend at Auto Club Speedway marks the historic continuation of NASCAR’s 75th anniversary season. The action begins on Saturday, Feb. 25 with the NASCAR Xfinity Series’ Production Alliance Group 300, then continues Sunday with the NASCAR Cup Series’ Pala Casino 400. - IMS Becomes First Sport Venue To Receive Silver Responsible Sport Certification
Press Release | INDIANAPOLIS MOTOR SPEEDWAY INDIANAPOLIS (Thursday, Feb. 9, 2023) – Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS), home to the largest single-day sporting event in the world, the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge, is the first sport facility to achieve organizational certification through the Council for Responsible Sport (Council). Organizational certification became available for the first time in August 2021. The new standard is based on the recognition of the following core principles: power of sport, resolution of climate change, enablement of social justice and business of sport. IMS was the first to commit to the new framework, implementing year-round tracking of environmental and social impacts for the more than 300 events hosted at IMS annually. Previously, in 2021, the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge was certified a responsible event. The Council provides a structured approach for event hosts and organizers to measure, implement, validate and improve the social and environmental sustainability of their events and venues . Certification is earned by taking action spanning five categories: planning and communications, procurement, resource management, access and equity and community legacy. IMS ultimately accomplished 210 credits across these categories, earning silver level distinction as a Certified Organization. “IMS’ commitment to embrace social and environmental realities and to implement a systematic approach to setting goals, adapting operations and measuring progress is outstanding,” said Rico Tesio, Council for Responsible Sport board chair. “Achieving Responsible Sport certification at an organizational level is not only a real milestone in the venue’s own storied history but also demonstrates leadership in motorsport and beyond and should be celebrated as vigorously as any checkered flag waved on the famous Yard of Bricks.” Key partnerships and the implementation of new tracking technology helped IMS achieve this landmark goal. With the addition of the new organizational certification, the Council implemented ReScore, a system designed to help venues track their progress. WM Sustainability Services was critical in IMS’ sustainability journey, providing support by documenting a variety of resource management credits relating to emissions calculations, waste diversion and energy consumption. “This is a monumental and impactful achievement for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, earned through a comprehensive commitment to innovation and hard work that safeguards our community and leads the way in our sport,” IMS President J. Douglas Boles said. “We learned a lot in 2021 when we received our event certification for the Indy 500. That process helped us get to this moment, where we are now tracking the impact of our events throughout the year and implementing systemic programs that yield results. “We remain committed to becoming the most sustainable motorsport venue in the world, and we are grateful for the support and enthusiasm shown by our fans as we continue to identify new opportunities to encourage their participation in this journey.” As part of the new certification, IMS implemented new standards and procedures. This includes the development of a diversity, equity and inclusion plan, along with a public commitment to the measurement and mitigation of environmental impacts. IMS expanded waste diversion efforts beyond the Indianapolis 500 to include events hosted at IMS year-round. Additionally, IMS adopted new procurement policies and protocols, eliminating single-use plastic and Styrofoam in office spaces, in addition to prioritizing purchases from women- and minority-owned businesses and businesses with sustainability related certifications.
- FORMULA E MAKES HISTORY WITH FIRST RACE IN INDIA - HOW TO WATCH THE 2023 GREENKO HYDERABAD E-PRIX
Press Release | FORMULA E HYDERABAD, India. Thurs. 9 Feb. 2023: Formula E will make history this Saturday (11 February) as the ABB FIA Formula E Championship comes to India for the first time with the 2023 Greenko Hyderabad E-Prix, Round 4 of the 16-race season. The 2.835km street circuit, constructed around the shores of the Hussain Sagar lake by the NTR Gardens, will see the first top-tier FIA World Championship motorsport in the country for a decade and will become India’s first elite electric motor racing event. Pascal Wehrlein, TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team driver, moved to the top of the Drivers’ standings after winning both races in the double-header in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia, thanks to an overtaking masterclass. But 2016/17 Formula E champion, Lucas di Grassi, and teammate Oliver Rowland are expected to attract the biggest cheers from passionate fans in the grandstand in the first home race for their team, Mahindra Racing. Di Grassi already has silverware to his name this season, sealed on his debut for Mahindra at the Mexico City season-opener, and no driver has been on the podium more than his nine in Asia. Lucas di Grassi, driver, Mahindra Racing, said: “It is important for us to have a good race in India – not only for the fans, but for the championship as well. It’s a new track for us, as it is for everyone up and down the grid. It needs to be a good weekend for us. We are going to try very hard and push to the limit to get the best out of the car. We can’t wait to see all the Indian fans out in force to support us and we want to give them a good show.” Oliver Rowland, driver, Mahindra Racing, said: “Heading into Hyderabad we know where we need to improve following a difficult weekend in Diriyah. Having the home fans behind us will add to the motivation we have racing on the team’s home ground. We know they will be fully behind us and supporting us, which will give us the extra push to perform well." AS IT STANDS If Mahindra Racing are to take to the top step of the podium in Hyderabad, they will have two Porsche-powered teams in TAG Heuer Porsche and Avalanche Andretti to overpower, based on current form. They have dominated Formula E so far in Season 9, with the Stuttgart manufacturer's 99X Electric Gen3 finishing one-two in every race so far. Andretti's Jake Dennis set the benchmark in Mexico City with the first win of the new GEN3 era, with Pascal Wehrlein following him home. The two fought hard in Rounds 2 and 3 in Diriyah, the last time out, but the German got the better of Dennis in both races to take the top prize and a dominant win-double in Saudi Arabia and the standings lead, while Porsche still narrowly trail customer Andretti in the Teams table by two points. Jake Hughes (NEOM McLaren Formula E Team) sealed a maiden Julius Baer Pole Position last time out. The rookie has scored in all three rounds so far this season and has the best qualifying record of anyone on the grid. He couldn't quite convert to silverware in the race but experienced teammate René Rast needed no second invitation to seal the team's first podium in Formula E in Round 3. Jaguar TCS Racing also attracted attention in Diriyah, with a resurgent Sam Bird returning to the podium after an uncharecteristically barren spell for the veteran of more than 100 Formula E races. No driver has won more than the Briton in Asia either, with Bird's four the benchmark - two in Diriyah, one in Putrajaya, Malaysia and another in Hong Kong. Before the season, some expected overtaking to be tough in the new GEN3 race car, with braking zones shortened thanks to the significant regen boost of the new car's double powertrain. That theory was blown away in Diriyah with some 36 moves outside of ATTACK MODE position changes completed over two races. Round 2 winner Wehrlein steered from ninth to the top step of the podium and Dennis followed with his own drive through the pack from 11th to second. On just three occasions has a driver won from further down the grid than Wehrlein managed and it was the first time consecutive Formula E races had been won from outside the top four since Zurich and New York City back in Season 4. WHEN TO WATCH Free Practice 1 for the 2023 Greenko Hyderabad E-Prix Round 4 gets underway at 16:30 IST (11:00 GMT) on Friday 10 February. - FORMULA E DEVELOPS NEW SONIC IDENTITY FEATURING UNIQUE SOUND OF THE GEN3 RACE CAR
Press Release | FORMULA E LONDON, UK. Wed. 8 Feb. 2023 - Formula E has reimagined its entire music and sound suite used across broadcast and digital channels, inspired by the power of electric acceleration and incorporating the sound of the fastest, lightest, most powerful and efficient electric race car ever built – the GEN3. The new sonic identity is part of an overall refresh of the Formula E brand, unveiled at the 2023 Hankook Mexico City E-Prix in January, and aligned to the beginning of the GEN3 era in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. The GEN3 is the third-generation Formula E race car and represents a huge leap in technology that pushes the boundaries of EV development. Incorporating the unique sound of the GEN3 into the new sonic identity was a key creative objective. Tom Player of Lost Track Productions, working alongside Alex Bingham of sound design company Machine, was commissioned by Formula E to develop the full music and sound suite. They attended private GEN3 testing sessions by two teams in the championship - NIO333 Racing and Mahindra Racing – where they recorded audio of the race cars being pushed to the limit ahead of their debut in Mexico City. The recordings were then developed into a range of sonic assets and embedded into the revitalised music and SFX package used across broadcast and digital content. The all-new soundtrack, including broadcast titles music, was composed by Tom Player and recorded live with a 55-piece orchestra at Abbey Road Studios. The music accompanies a new broadcast intro titles film produced for Formula E by production partner Aurora Media Worldwide in collaboration with The Berry. The film features drivers in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship including defending champion Stoffel Vandoorne, Mitch Evans, António Félix Da Costa and Jake Dennis with CGI-footage of the new GEN3 car racing through some of this season’s host cities including Cape Town, São Paulo, Monaco and London. Channel 4 viewers in the UK will experience the new title sequence for the first time on linear TV this Saturday with the live broadcast of the 2023 Greenko Hyderabad E-Prix from 9am. The titles can also be viewed at: https://youtu.be/S-SD_4-zzrM Henry Chilcott, Chief Marketing Officer, Formula E, said: “This has been a year of renewal for Formula E - new GEN3 race car, new teams, new look and new sound. The music score and soundscape sets the tone for the entire fan experience. Working with Lost Track Productions and Machine Sound, our ambition was to create a bold new anthem for our sport as part of our newly launched brand identity. The library of music composed by Tom Player is designed to work like a film score evoking different emotions to enhance the race weekend experience from opening broadcast titles right the way through to the live podium celebrations.” The new soundtrack has been released as a 7-track album, titled Change. Accelerated (The Official Formula E Soundtrack) and is available on all major streaming platforms including Spotify and Apple Music.
- Gus Dean Returns to Venturini Motorsports for Part-Time 2023 ARCA Schedule
Press Release | GUS DEAN CONCORD, N.C.: Two-time ARCA Menards Series winner Gus Dean is returning to the potent Venturini Motorsports for a limited schedule this season beginning with the season-opener at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway on February 18, 2023. Dean, 28, returns to Concord, N.C.-based team after a four-race schedule which resulted in four top-five finishes highlighted with a track-best fifth-place finish at Daytona and a season-high fourth-place effort at Michigan International Speedway. From February to August, the Bluffton, S.C. native had an average finish of 4.8. A competitor in the ARCA Menards Series since 2016, the veteran racer returns to the “World Center of Racing” for a seventh time focused on delivering Venturini Motorsports their sixth consecutive ARCA triumph at the 2.5-mile superspeedway aboard the team’s flagship No. 25 Toyota Camry. Dean scored his first career ARCA Menards Series victory in just his second start at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway in 2016 but had been cursed at Daytona over a period of five previous races until he returned to the track on the ARCA scene in 2022 where he qualified second and recovered from being collected in a mid-race incident to collect his then 14th career ARCA top-five finish. “I am pumped up about returning to Venturini Motorsports in 2023,” said Dean. “I am looking forward to building on the success we achieved last season and I strongly believe this season we can turn our success into checkered flags and get ourselves a win or two throughout the year.” Last month, Dean said he wheeled the best superspeedway car of his career during the annual preseason ARCA testing at the iconic race track which saw the No. 25 Toyota Camry run one of the fastest laps of the weekend and give the Kevin Reed Jr.-led team momentum leaning into the first of 20 races on the 2023 schedule. “I can’t begin to describe how fast our Toyota Camry was during the test last month,” added Dean. “It was really fast every single run. We just made it better and better throughout the two-day test and I left the track knowing it was the best superspeedway car I have ever had. I hope we are able to build on the success and our notes during the event weekend and I can keep the Venturini Motorsports’ streak alive at Daytona and capture my third but biggest win of my ARCA career.” Venturini Motorsports’ Billy Venturini says having a veteran like Dean back in the team’s lineup this season is important. “I feel really positive about Gus at Daytona,” said Venturini. “He is the most experienced of all the drivers on our roster. I feel like he can bring a veteran calmness to the team. Without a doubt, he should be able to contend for the win and improve the team as a whole with his leadership. “Looking past Daytona, it’s just great to have him back. He will contend to win races beyond Daytona with us in 2023 and we look forward at that opportunity with him in our No. 25 Toyota Camry.” Added Dean, “the Venturini Motorsports team really welcomed me with open arms last season and they continued to make me feel like I was a member of their family. That is important to me. Billy, Mr. Bill and Mrs. Cathy (Venturini) and the entire Venturini Motorsports team believe in me and my abilities and as a race car driver there is no better feeling than that. “I am ready for Daytona and cannot wait to get there.” In addition to Daytona, Dean will return to ARCA competition with Venturini Motorsports at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway in April, Michigan International Speedway in August and Salem (Ind.) Speedway in September. Additional ARCA races with Venturini Motorsports could be added as the season progresses. Dean, a fan favorite is poised to have a busy 2023 season between ARCA, Late Models, Mud Truck Racing and a hopeful sporadic appearance or two in one of NASCAR’s National Series. “With no championship on the line for me this season, it’s about having fun,” sounded Dean. “Whether that’s competing with Venturini Motorsports in ARCA, DLP Motorsports in Late Model competition or the other racing endeavors we have planned for this season. Of course, the urge to still compete full-time is there, but it takes marketing partners and a lot of financial commitment to make it happen. “Until we can hopefully put ourselves back into that position again, we’ll take the path that has been laid out before me and make the most of it. Venturini Motorsports is going for an unprecedented sixth straight ARCA victory at Daytona and I want to be that driver that gets it done for them!” Before Dean buckles in at Daytona, he will have a busy week leading up to the 2023 ARCA season opener, as he’ll also be competing at New Smyrna (Fla.) Speedway in the highly contested World Series of Asphalt driving a Pro Late Model for DLP Motorsports. “It means everything to us to have Gus represent DLP Motorsports,” said David “Buggy” Pletcher, owner of DLP Motorsports. “Not only is Gus a great person but he is a talented driver. It’s good to have a driver of his caliber with all the experience he has for the other younger drivers to bounce ideas and such off each other. “We can definitely win with him down there. He has come a long way and is considered a veteran now. He will be an asset to us as a driver but also as a teammate for our other DLP Motorsports driver Gavan (Boschele). Hopefully, we have the right combination that will allow him to continue to show his abilities.” For more on Gus Dean, please visit GusDean.com, like him on Facebook (Gus Dean Racing) and follow him on Twitter (@GusDean).

The online portal now features more than 120 employers from across the industry, with nearly 1,500 job alert signups from potential hires taking place. “We’re extremely pleased with the success of the NHRA Launch program thus far and we continue to be thrilled about the growth and how it has become an important platform to those seeking a job in motorsports,” NHRA Senior Marketing Manager John Baadilla said. “It’s allowed teams and companies within our industry to find qualified candidates, and it’s also given job seekers one spot to see all the great opportunities in our sport. The generous contribution gave NHRA the resources to facilitate the early connections between job seekers and employers, and that momentum continues to grow. It’s opened a number of doors already, creating a wealth of opportunities for a new generation of motorsports professionals. “It’s really created so many great possibilities for those who are interested in working in our sport or industry,” Baadilla said. “Someone can go online and see what fits their skills, abilities or interests. The partnership – which will feature Ambetter Health, a leading provider of health insurance offerings on the Health Insurance Marketplace, and Wellcare, which offers a wide range of Medicare Advantage and Medicare Prescription Drug Plans (PDP) – starts at Daytona International Speedway in February when Smith attempts to qualify for his second career NCS start and first Daytona 500 aboard the No. 36 Wellcare Ford Mustang. “I’m fortunate to have a great sponsor of Centene’s stature to step up and support me and Front Row Motorsports as I look to gain racing experience in the NASCAR Cup Series while at the same time defending the NASCAR Craftsman title,” said the 23-year-old Smith. “I’m excited to represent Ambetter Health and Wellcare as Centene continues to grow their involvement in NASCAR and their healthcare presence across the United States.” As the cornerstone partner for Smith’s previously announced part-time 2023 NCS plans, Centene will be primary sponsor for five additional NCS races aboard the chartered No. 38 car at the following race tracks: Phoenix Raceway (March, Wellcare), Talladega Superspeedway (April, Wellcare), Sonoma Raceway (June, Wellcare), Texas Motor Speedway (September, Ambetter Health) and Charlotte Motor Speedway (October, Ambetter Health). In addition to the six-race NCS primary car sponsorship, Centene will feature Ambetter Health as the primary sponsor of Smith’s NCTS No. 38 Ford 150 truck at Miami-Homestead Speedway on October 21. - TICKETS ON SALE FOR COUNTDOWN TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP OPENER, THE PEP BOYS NHRA NATIONALS
Press Release | NHRA, PEP BOYS NATIONALS READING, Pa. (Feb. 6, 2023) – Tickets are now on sale for the 38th annual Pep Boys NHRA Nationals, which again serves as the opening race of the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series Countdown to the Championship on Sept. 14-17 at Maple Grove Raceway. The historic track has been a staple on the NHRA tour for nearly four decades and has been home to countless memorable performances over the years, and last year marked a special moment in track history as well. Kenny Koretsky and his family, including current Pro Stock driver Kyle Koretsky, purchased the track in 2022, making several upgrades to the track and facility. It helped lead to a spectacular weekend with massive crowds, including a sellout crowd on Saturday during the Koretsky family’s first national event. Building on that momentum, the passionate fans in the area will again be able to enjoy another thrilling weekend of 330-mp racing action at the Pep Boys NHRA Nationals in 2023. “To see the support of the racing fans last year was incredible. It was a fantastic first national event for our family and we can’t wait to welcome everyone back for the Pep Boys NHRA Nationals in 2023,” Kyle Koretsky said. “We’ve built a strong team and we’re continuing to work hard to give our customers a top-notch facility. There are so many great racing fans in this area, and we’re determined to always make this event an incredible one for every fan and race team in attendance.” The 38th annual Pep Boys NHRA Nationals from Maple Grove Raceway is the first of six races in the Countdown to the Championship and the 16th of 21 races during the 2023 season. Austin Prock (Top Fuel), Robert Hight (Funny Car), Erica Enders (Pro Stock) and Joey Gladstone (Pro Stock Motorcycle) won last year’s event, which was shown on FOX as the NFL adjacent broadcast, drawing the biggest viewing audience in NHRA history. All four professional classes will again be on hand in Reading to open the postseason in 2023, with drivers looking to get a quick start on the road to a championship. Enders went on to win her fifth world title in Pro Stock, also picking up her first career victory at Maple Grove Raceway, while both Hight and Gladstone finished second in points. It was one of two victories in the Countdown to the Championship for Prock, who finished a career-best third in points. Located in the heart of Amish country, the fan-favorite facility boasts a wonderful, scenic backdrop for the huge fanbase that turns out to see one incredible run after another. Top Fuel world champion Brittany Force made the quickest run in NHRA history in 2019 with a pass of 3.623-seconds, one of many marquee moments at the track over the years. Tony Schumacher, who made his return to full-time racing in 2022, has posted five Top Fuel wins at the facility over the years, while John Force’s seven Funny Car victories are the most for any professional driver at Maple Grove Raceway. In Pro Stock, Greg Anderson, who picked up his 100th career win in 2022, has three wins in Reading and Eddie Krawiec has five in Pro Stock Motorcycle. Krawiec, a multi-time champ, is also one victory away from his 50th career win entering 2023. The can’t-miss action at Maple Grove Raceway will include four rounds of qualifying, including two on both Friday and Saturday. That leads into eliminations on Sunday, where fans can witness all the thrilling side-by-side action as the stars of the NHRA race for the coveted Wally trophy. To purchase tickets to the Pep Boys NHRA Nationals, fans can visit https://tickets1.maplegroveraceway.com/#/event-list. All children 12 and under will be admitted free in the general admission area with a paid adult. For more information about NHRA, visit www.NHRA.com.
- Martin Truex Jr. Wins Wild Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum
Press Release | MARTIN TRUEX JR. LOS ANGELES (Feb. 5, 2023) – In front of a large, enthusiastic crowd in one of the most iconic venues in sports, Martin Truex Jr. earned his first NASCAR Cup Series victory in more than a season in a rough-and-tumble all-thrills Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum Sunday night at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Truex’s No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota held off Austin Dillon’s No. 3 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet by a mere .786-second leading the final 25 laps of the 150-lap annual non-points exhibition event marking the start of the NASCAR season. It was the former series champion Truex’s first career Busch Light Clash victory. Dillon’s new teammate, two-time series champion Kyle Busch finished third in the No. 8 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet – the three top-finishers feted on a podium with medals; reminiscent of the Olympic Games the venue has also famously hosted. “Just really good race car, the guys did a really good job with this Bass Pro Shops Toyota Camry," the New Jersey native Truex said, “Last year was a pretty rough season for us with no wins, to come out here and kick it off this way, just really proud of these guys. “Tonight, was just kind of persevere, not give up and just battle through and we found ourselves in the right spot at the end. Sometimes they work out your way and sometimes they don’t. Tonight, it went our way.” The iconic HOLLYWOOD sign on the hills overlooking Turn 3 and the downtown Los Angeles skyline just beyond Turn 2 provided a unique setting to this event. It was a packed house at the 100-year-old Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum for the race – lots of new fans mixed with the most loyal long-timers dressed in their best NASCAR fan t-shirts, driver jackets and hats excited to watch the NASCAR Cup Series show exactly the kind of high-drama short track action that has made the 75-year-old sport an American treasure. The track was purpose-built inside the stadium bringing the sport to a new market, which appears to have whole-heartedly embraced. And while this may be a pre-season exhibition, frustration was often in mid-season form Sunday night. The race was slowed 16 times for cautions. Dillon had a late race run-in with Bubba Wallace, their cars colliding. Wallace got the worst end of the contact and was knocked from contending for the win to instead finishing 22nd in the 27-car field – despite leading 40 laps and challenging Truex as the race wound down. “Obviously, Bubba knocked me through the corner," Dillon said. “I was going to hit him back. Didn’t mean to turn him like that but when it gets down to the end, I think everybody knows what’s going on and that’s what you see at places like this and [North Carolina short track] Bowman Gray Stadium." Dillon acknowledged that Wallace may be upset with him and said they would talk. Hendrick Motorsports teammates Alex Bowman and Kyle Larson rounded out the top five. Tyler Reddick was sixth in his debut in the No. 45 23XI Racing Toyota. New Englander Ryan Preece, 32, making his first start in the No. 41 Ford for Stewart-Haas Racing led the most laps (43) but fell back with 24 laps to go, telling his crew there was some sort of electrical problem. He finished seventh. Denny Hamlin, who won his Heat Race earlier in the day in his No. 11 JGR Toyota, finished ninth with driver William Byron in the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet rounding out the top 10. The four Heat and two Last Chance Qualifier races Sunday afternoon provided plenty of drama in setting the field for the Main Event under the lights – and under the fire of the Coliseum’s famed peristyle (torch). Both RFK Racing Fords – driven by team co-owner Brad Keselowski and Chris Buescher were among the eight cars that didn’t qualify. Joining the RFK drivers on that list of DNQs are Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Harrison Burton, Ty Dillon, Corey LaJoie, Cody Ware, J.J. Yeley and B.J. McLeod. The NASCAR Cup Series next moves east to Florida for the Feb. 19 regular season-opening DAYTONA 500 at the Daytona International Speedway (Sunday, Feb. 19, 2:30 p.m. ET on FOX, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).
- Massive Partnership Lineup Announced for JTG Daugherty Racing’s 2023 NASCAR Cup Series Season
Press Release | JTG DAUGHERTY RACING Harrisburg, N.C. (February 2, 2023) - - The NASCAR Cup Series season is ramping up, and the JTG Daugherty Racing’s partner list for the No. 47 Kroger Racing Camaro is close to completing its lineup for the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series season. “We are humbled to share the news about our esteemed Kroger Racing partner lineup today,” said Paul Zindrick, JTG Daugherty Racing VP of Corporate Partnerships. “At the top of the pyramid is Kroger® because we could not do this without their unwavering support. Together we have built a best-in-class program that provides a positive ROI to our new and existing partners.” “It has been a busy offseason, and we are excited to get the season kicked off with all of our partners,” added JTG Daugherty Racing co-owner Tad Geschickter. “Our goal this season is to win races and to sell cases!” The Kroger Co., which is one of JTG Daugherty Racing’s longest running relationships and the nation’s largest grocer, has played an integral role with the company since 2010. The team has coordinated countless merchandising events and promotional campaigns with multiple divisions and CPG (consumer packaged goods) partners. To tie into the divisional activations, banners will be rotated on Ricky Stenhouse Jr.’s No. 47 Camaro. Those banners include: Kroger, Dillons®, Food 4 Less®, Fry’s® Food Stores, Mariano’s, Ralphs® and Smith’s®. For starters, Food 4 Less takes center stage for NASCAR’s electrifying preseason race, The Clash at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The No. 47 Food 4 Less Camaro will carry The Kraft-Heinz Company’s supremely creamy Velveeta® brand during the exhibition race this Sunday on FOX. “We have an impressive list of partners in our Kroger Racing program,” said two-time NASCAR Cup Series winner and two-time NASCAR Xfinity Series champion Ricky Stenhouse Jr. “We’re looking forward to starting our regular season and delivering both on and off the track for our Kroger Racing partners.” JTG Daugherty Racing has added multiple new partners including The Coca-Cola Company, which has rich ties to stock-car racing with roots that run deep. This year, the beverage giant has elevated their partnership with the Kroger Racing team and will feature Coca-Cola® in a variety of races this season on the No. 47. Another major partner added is Kellogg Company, which features delicious brands that we know and love while “creating better days and a place at the table for everyone through trusted food brands.” The Kellogg Company will highlight hero brand Cheez-It® snack crackers and Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes® cereal that gives the “sweet spark to go all in.” New to the stable as well is Blue Buffalo™ dog and cat food with the finest natural ingredients, where quality ingredients are only the beginning. Animals have always been near and dear to the hearts of our team owners since the company’s inception and the brand is a great fit. Surely, to be a fan favorite, Dreyer’s™ Grand Ice Cream has jumped on board. For nearly a century, Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream has served up scoops. They will spotlight Drumstick®, which has been America’s favorite since 1928 and a staple in the team’s freezer throughout the years. Continuing with the momentum, Tree Top® has joined the racing organization as well. Tree Top takes “pride in good fruit and crafting 100% fruit juice.” They turn fruit they harvest into Apple Sauce that people have enjoyed for generations. Both their Apple Sauce and Apple Juice will be displayed on the No. 47 Camaro. We’re also excited to announce Upfield™ is joining the team. They are new to us, but their slow-churned creamy Country Crock® spread is not new to racing. NASCAR fans will get to see mom’s ally in action during Darlington’s Throwback weekend. Also, I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter!® will be spotlighted in the program. But wait, there’s more! The team welcomes Pit Boss®, which covers the rubs and spices category and is our official grilling partner for this season. We are also happy to announce that Sugarlands Distilling Co., which performs the age-old craft of distilling fine award-winning spirits, has joined the racing organization. Further, to help soothe our aches and pains during the season, Sanofi’s Icy Hot® comprehensive line of pain-relieving solutions has been signed. Up next are our long-term partners. Like The Kroger Co., Kimberly-Clark has been a longstanding partner of ours for over a decade. Their first appearance on the No. 47 was also in 2010 with Scott® Products, and they sponsored the No. 47 car when we visited Victory Lane in 2014 at Watkins Glen International. Scott® Brand, Cottonelle®, Kleenex® and Viva® will be featured on Stenhouse Jr.’s car at various times during the 2023 season. The pioneer and global leader is jumpstarting the regular season with Cottonelle on the No. 47 Kroger Camaro for the Daytona 500 on February 19th. Another one of our innovative partners, Bimbo Bakeries USA, has returned for the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series season. For half a decade, their shopper marketing team has found clever ways to showcase and successfully activate the partnership all year long. We’re looking forward to continuing to grow together, and highlighting their iconic brands. Thomas’®, known for “English Muffins to Everything Bagels,” is identified as the hero brand while Entenmann’s® and Ball Park® Buns & Rolls will have nice visibility during select events. One more returning partner includes the trusted brands of Colgate-Palmolive. Over 200 years they have served hundreds of millions of consumers worldwide. Their Irish Spring® Body Wash was spotted in multiple races during the 2022 season and strategically had placement on the No. 47 Kroger Racing Camaro for the Bristol Dirt Race. The team needed Irish Spring® Body Wash from the cloud of dirt kicked up during that cool spectacle. Irish Spring returns for the Bristol Dirt Race on April 9th. Shifting from body wash to a snack bar category, General Mills returns with their perfect bars for wherever you are. Nature Valley™ is packing a punch with snacks that keep you going throughout the day. Additionally, they are featuring Totino’s™ golden Pizza Rolls and Party Pizza. Next, Conagra Brands combines a rich heritage of great food with innovation at the heart of what they do. Their iconic protein snack, Slim Jim®, is back on the No. 47 Camaro. Adding to the powerhouse brands listed is The Hershey Company, which has 90 beloved brands and a legacy of goodness. It was nostalgic to see their Reese’s® brand return to NASCAR on Stenhouse Jr.’s No. 47 Camaro at Charlotte last year. This time around, they will be with us at North Wilkesboro Speedway for the All-Star race weekend. Then we have Harvest Hill’s bold and tasty unique orange drink, SUNNYD®. They have a long history with Stenhouse Jr. prior to the Olive Branch, Mississippi native joining JTG Daugherty Racing in 2020. We’re proud to announce they have signed on for this season, especially since they have played a vital role in Stenhouse Jr.’s NASCAR Cup Series success: two wins, three pole awards, 20 top-five and 45 top-10 finishes. Riviana® Foods Inc. is another longstanding partner featuring Minute® Rice that suits our team and NASCAR consumers’ fast-paced lifestyle. Minute Rice is quick and easy to make with great flavor for a side dish or as a recipe ingredient and a household name. That wraps up the list for now. In the coming weeks, the team plans to share more news as contracts are placed in the drawer. For now, be sure to tune into the upcoming preseason exhibition race at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The Busch Light Class airs at 8 PM ET on FOX, MRN Radio, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio (Ch. 90) on Sunday, February 5th (and qualifying heat races begin at 5 PM ET).
