- Kevin Magnussen returns to Haas F1 for 2022
Haas F1 on Twitter After Russian driver Nikita Mazepin was dropped from Haas F1 after the Russian invasion in Ukraine, Haas signs F1 veteran Kevin Magnussen to a multi-year contract. Magnussen last raced in Formula One for Haas in 2020. Since then, Magnussen has raced in the IMSA Weathertech Sports Car Series and in a one-off NTT IndyCar Series at Road America. Magnussen will pair with Mick Shumacher for the driver line up for Haas F1 Team. “I’m delighted to welcome Kevin Magnussen back to Haas F1 Team,” said Guenther Steiner, Team Principal of Haas F1 Team, in a Haas F1 Team press release. “When looking for a driver who could bring value to the team, not to mention a wealth of Formula 1 experience, Kevin was a straightforward decision for us. Kevin’s immediate availability means we can tap into him as a resource for pre-season testing alongside both Mick Schumacher and Pietro Fittipaldi. Pietro’s going to be first in this week with half a day’s running at the test on Thursday – that’s a great opportunity for him, with Mick and Kevin doing the rest ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix.” Kevin Magnussen was very happy to return to Formula One and will be a fan favorite to watch throughout 2022. “Naturally, I also want to thank Gene Haas and Guenther Steiner for the chance to resume my Formula 1 career – I know just how competitive they both are and how keen they are to return to competing week in and week out." Magnussen said in a statement. "We’ve enjoyed a solid relationship and our positive association remained even when I left at the end of 2020. I’ve been briefed as much as possible on the development of the VF-22 and the potential in the package. There’s work to do but I’m excited to be a part of it. I can’t wait to get back behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car in Bahrain.” For more Formula One news, results, and opinion. Stay right here on Racing Refresh. Follow me on Twitter, @TheCollinBest
- 2022 NTT IndyCar Series Season Preview.
Via IndyCar on Twitter After Alex Palou of Chip Ganassi Racing took home the Astor Cup in 2021. The NTT IndyCar Series comes into 2022 with a full head of steam in momentum. With one of the most exciting and competitive rookie classes the series has had in years. New faces in new places and a seven-time NASCAR champion attempting to make his first Indianapolis 500. In the article, you will read about all the changes to all the teams competing in full-time competition along with the full schedule that will make drivers and teams defy everything. AJ Foyt Racing: For 2022, Dalton Kellett returns as the elder statesman in the AJ Foyt Racing lineup. His best performances came on oval with his best run coming last summer at Gateway with a 12th place finish. Joining him as the only other full-time driver on the team is Kyle Kirkwood, who is replacing the departing Sebastien Bourdais in the No. 14 ROKit Chevrolet. Kirkwood is the only driver in IndyCar history to win in all three levels of the Road to Indy program, taking a USF2000, Indy Pro 2000, and Indy Lights championship in consecutive years. No other rookie in the series has as much hype as Kyle Kirkwood this year. Rounding out the team is fellow rookie Tatiana Calderon. She is a 28-year-old Colombian driver who has competed in the Super Formula series in Japan. She will only compete on the road and street course races in 2021. Arrow McLaren SP: Pato O'Ward and Felix Rosenqvist return to Arrow McLaren SP after a fantastic season in 2021. For O'Ward, who earned his first oval and road course wins in 2021, led the point standings twice during the year is a returning championship favorite for 2022. Rosenqvist showed flashes of brilliance last year followed by some horrible luck and a nasty accident at the second race of the Grand Prix of Detroit doubleheader last year that made him miss the next two races. Joining them again for the Indianapolis 500 is former champion Juan Pablo Montoya who finished ninth in last year's race. Andretti Autosport: Colton Herta was the shining star last year in one of the most popular teams in the paddock, with three wins and three P1 awards in 2021. Look for him to try and be more consistent throughout the year that will leave him in championship contention at Laguna Seca. The only other returning driver to Andretti is former Indianapolis 500 winner, Alexander Rossi. By most accounts, Rossi was the least impressive of the two returning by only having two top-six finishes last year. With reports of animosity between Rossi and Andretti, look for him to be a top free agent driver in 2023. Joining them are two new drivers to round out the four-car stable. Romain Grosjean takes over the No. 28 DHL Honda in a full-time ride. Grosjean certainly looked competitive during the season and will be attempting to qualify for his first Indy 500. Devlin DeFrancesco joins the team as a rookie, he made noise in Indy Lights last year having nine top-five finishes in twenty races. Chip Ganassi Racing: Chip Ganassi Racing took home its 14th IndyCar Series championship in 2021. Was it Scott Dixon? No, it was Alex Palou shocking the IndyCar world. The team remains unchanged moving into this season as all four drivers will be running a full-time season. Three of the four drivers all scored multiple wins in 2021 and placed themselves as the team to beat in 2022. For Jimmie Johnson, who showed improvement as the season winded down, will attempt a full schedule this year in the series and join Romain Grosjean as a pair who will make headlines during the Month of May Dale Coyne Racing: No team in the paddock has undergone as many changes as Dale Conye Racing for 2022. Romain Grosjean has departed the team and former Indy 500 champion Takuma Sato will pilot the No. 51 NURTEC ODT Dale Conye Racing with RWR Honda. Redemption will be the name of the game for Sato as he will attempt to win a race which he failed to do so last year. Which also marks the first year since 2016 that Sato failed to sit atop the podium on a given race weekend. Joining Sato is another rookie in David Malukas who is replacing Ed Jones in the No. 18 Dale Coyne Racing with HMD Motorsports Honda. Malukas was another headlining driver in Indy Lights last year taking ten victories in the twenty-race season last year. Malukas only finished 13 points behind Kirkwood in the championship standings and had an average starting position of 2.0. Ed Carpenter Racing: Rinus Veekay brought the Indiana team to victory lane at the GMR Grand Prix of Indianapolis last year and followed that up with a front-row start in the Indy 500. Conor Daly and Ed Carpenter shared the No. 20 ride last year. This year, Connor Daly gets the full-time driver duties as Veekay will share a ride with Ed Carpenter. As the team hopes to field three entries into the 500, but nothing is set in stone as of now. Juncos Hollinger: 2021 was not much to write home about as the team debuted at the Grand Prix of Portland late last year. Callum Ilott, who is a current member of the Ferrari Driver Academy is on tap to run full time in 2022. The team has rebranded itself with color changes and staff changes. Meyer Shank Racing: Helio Castroneves won his fourth Indy 500. That's it really for 2021. Jack Harvey departed the team late last year. In his place is Simon Pagenaud in the No. 60 AutoNation/Sirius XM Honda. This is Castroneves first full-time season since 2017, Pagenaud was his Team Penske teammate at the time. Expectation of this team are high, especially when the Month of May rolls around. But look for these two to be championship contenders throughout the 2022 season. If Helio wins a race in 2022, it will break a tie with Paul Tracy and Dario Franchitti with all-time wins in the series, moving him to tenth place. Team Penske: Newgarden, Power, and 2021 Rookie of the Year Scott McLaughlin return to Team Penske in 2022. For Newgarden, he was only 38 points away from clinching his third series title after taking two wins last year. For Will Power, who took a win at the Big Machine Spiked Coolers Grand Prix had a very up and down season last year. With that being the high point of his campaign and the ECU melting in the Michigan heat at the Detroit Grand Prix at Belle Isle. Scott McLaughlin's finishes at Texas and Gateway propelled him to a Rookie of the Year title, finishing one place ahead of Romain Grosjean in the series standings. After five years of having a four-car team, Team Penske has downsized entries to three for 2022. Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing: Graham Rahal is the only returning driver to the three-car team this year. In 2021, Rahal finished seventh in the standings at the end of the year and season was highlighted by top-five finishes at Texas. Joining him this year is Jack Harvey, who moved from Meyer Shank and will now drive the No. 45 Hy-Vee Honda piloted last year by Santino Ferrucci. Christian Lundgaard made his debut last year by qualifying fourth at the Big Machine Spiked Coolers Grand Prix at Indy last year. He will round out the team as the third full-time driver for the organization. 2022 Race Schedule: February 27th: Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg - 12:00 P.M. - NHRA Phoenix: Hight stays perfect; Salinas, Stanfield also win.
NHRA Media Feed CHANDLER, Ariz. (Feb. 27, 2022) – Robert Hight stayed perfect during the 2022 NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series season, rolling to his second straight victory in Funny Car on Sunday at the NHRA Arizona Nationals in front of another huge crowd at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park. Mike Salinas (Top Fuel) and Aaron Stanfield (Pro Stock) also picked up wins at the second of 22 races during the 2022 NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series season. In a marquee matchup of two three-time world champions in the final round, Hight went 3.837-seconds at 330.39 mph in his 11,000-horsepower Auto Club Chevrolet Camaro SS, outrunning No. 1 qualifier Matt Hagan and denying Tony Stewart his first win as a NHRA team owner. After qualifying second for a second straight week, Hight was in the 3.80s in all four elimination rounds, powering past Paul Lee, Bob Tasca III and teammate John Force to reach the final round. He made the quickest run of eliminations in the final round to extend his points lead and pick up his 55th career victory after winning in impressive fashion in Pomona last week as well. “We’ve got a lot of great guys on this team, and it was such a team effort,” said Hight, who picked up his third Phoenix win with his triumph on Sunday. “(Crew chief) Jimmy Prock, Chris Cunningham and all these guys worked hard all winter and it’s all coming together. It’s so hard to win one of these, much less two in a row. In this day and age, that’s amazing and it’s a big win for this team. We made seven runs in the 3.80s this weekend (including qualifying), so that’s pretty impressive. I’m very fortunate to get to drive this car. This is what you dream about, but it’s not going to get any easier with so many great drivers in this class.” Hagan wrapped up a solid weekend with his new team, setting the track record in qualifying, and advancing to the final round for the first time this season and the 72nd time in his career with round wins against Terry Haddock, Alexis DeJoria and Tim Wilkerson. In just the second race with a new crew chief, Salinas grabbed an impressive Top Fuel victory, going 3.751 at 318.24 in his 11,000-horsepower Scrappers Racing dragster to knock off Clay Millican in the final round. It gives Salinas his fourth career victory, but also the second in his last five races dating back to last season, when he finished a career-best third in points. With crew chief Rob Flynn calling the shots, Salinas picked right back up in 2022 after his hot finish last year, knocking off Jim Maroney, Shawn Langdon and four-time defending world champ Steve Torrence to reach the final round. Salinas put together three runs in the 3.60s before the finals and he took over the points lead in the loaded Top Fuel class in the process. “We went through quite a bit to get the right synergy,” Salinas said. “This NHRA racing, it’s a tough game. If you don’t have all the parts and pieces to keep it in place, you’re not going to do very well. Rob is a brilliant man, very calm and relaxed, and calculated. He told me he’ll see me in the finals. If you look at our runs, I was blown away. There’s a lot of good stuff going with this team. I’m very confident in where we’re going and what we’re doing, and these guys on this team are something special. I know we can run with these guys in this (Top Fuel) class, and I know we can beat them.” Millican enjoyed a strong weekend in Phoenix as well, advancing to his 19th career final round thanks to round wins against Tripp Tatum, eight-time world champ Tony Schumacher and Josh Hart. A week after advancing to the final round to open the season, Stanfield stayed red-hot and finished the job on Sunday in an all-Elite Motorsports final round, going 6.526 at 210.50 in his Janac Brothers Camaro to beat teammate Troy Coughlin Jr.’s 6.539 at 210.24. It gives Stanfield his fifth career win and first in Phoenix, and also the first since he became a father for the first time just last week. After qualifying second for the second straight week, he knocked off Alan Prusiensky, reigning world champ Greg Anderson and Mason McGaha to reach the finals. He went 6.503 against Anderson, posting the quickest run in the class in two years, en route to capping off what’s been a memorable couple weeks for the young standout. “All weekend we had a good hot rod, and I did just good enough every round as a driver to win,” said Stanfield, who also took over the points lead. “I can’t thank the guys at Elite enough. I don’t think you could write (the last two weeks) any better than this. There’s been a lot of emotions and a lot of great memories, and I’m just really thankful for all of it. If I can perform well on the starting line, we’ve got a car and a team that’s tough to beat. It’s a long season, but we’ve got a lot of big goals and we’ll see what we can do.” Making his first appearance at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park, rising star Coughlin Jr. picked up his third career final-round berth, knocking off Matt Hartford, Deric Kramer and No. 1 qualifier Kyle Koretsky to reach the championship round. The NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series returns to action March 10-13 with the Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway. The Pep Boys Top Fuel All-Star Callout specialty race will also take place at the event. *************************** CHANDLER, Ariz. -- Final finish order (1-16) at the 37th annual NHRA Arizona Nationals at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park.
