- FOUR-WAY TITLE FIGHT AT THE 2022 SABIC LONDON E-PRIX AS FORMULA E SEASON CLIMAX APPROACHES
Press Release / Formula E The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship is entering the final stretch with four drivers pulling away from the pack in the Drivers’ World Championship standings and only four races remaining across two double-header weekends. The 2022 SABIC London E-Prix is the first of those two weekends, with Round 13 this Saturday and Round 14 on Sunday at the ExCeL London event venue in the heart of historic Docklands in the east of London. Formula E made its first trip to ExCeL London last season, and in a first for an international race series raced on an indoor/outdoor circuit layout which offered up a completely unique challenge for drivers and teams to get their heads around. Both those races were won by British drivers with Jake Dennis and Mahindra Racing’s former driver Alex Lynn making home advantage count. While only a handful of fans were permitted into the venue last year because of Covid restrictions, this weekend sees full capacity grandstands open to the public for the first time for a Formula E race at ExCeL London. Fans in London are set for a dramatic home race weekend where any one of the top four drivers could take the lead or see their title chances take a big hit before Season 8 concludes in Seoul on 13 and 14 August. Last time out in New York City, Mercedes-EQ’s Stoffel Vandoorne regained the advantage at the top of the Drivers’ World Championship after a mixed set of results across two hotly-contested rounds in the Big Apple. The Belgian turned an 11-point deficit into an 11-point advantage over ROKiT Venturi Racing driver Edoardo Mortara. The Swiss’ struggles opened the door for the rest of the top four, also including Mitch Evans (Jaguar TCS Racing) and DS TECHEETAH’s Jean-Éric Vergne, to close the gap – but not everybody was able to capitalise, with the Frenchman enduring a particularly tough weekend with no points. The whole top four are still split by fewer points than are on offer in any single Formula E round, and with two races in London followed by a double-header in Seoul still to come, the season may be heading towards its climax but there’s still time for it all to change. Vandoorne's trip to the Big Apple could scarcely have been a better one. The Mercedes-EQ driver followed up a fourth-placed finish on Saturday with a podium and second place on Sunday while those around him in the title fight faltered. There was a clear lead-four heading into the New York City E-Prix double-header, with Mortara topping the pile after securing a podium in Jakarta and a third win of the season in Marrakesh. Mortara struggled to make real inroads in New York, however, after failing to make it through the Groups in qualifying on Saturday, with the ROKiT Venturi driver also slapped with a post-race penalty which saw him demoted from a fighting fifth position to ninth, while Vandoorne came home fourth. On Sunday, a brake-by-wire issue scuppered the ROKiT Venturi driver's qualifying session, leaving him marooned right at the back of the pack for the start of Round 12 and with it all to do again. The best he could manage was to fight to 10th and a single World Championship point with Vandoorne winding up second. Eleventh in Round 11 for Evans was rescued by a combative drive to third on Sunday, but Vergne will be scrabbling for a far better return in London after gaining no points at the worst possible moment with the season reaching its climax. This meant an 11-point advantage for Mortara became an 11-point deficit to Vandoorne come the chequered flag on Round 12. A 22-point swing at the stage of the season is huge, and with NYC providing the most recent evidence, we may well see another of that top four break clear before the final chequered flag falls in London on Sunday. The Teams’ World Championship is equally hard-fought, with Mercedes-EQ pulling 10 points on second-placed ROKiT Venturi Racing post-New York. DS TECHEETAH managed to draw level on points in joint-second, with the team’s CEO Mark Preston in confident form after António Félix da Costa steered the team to a maximum in Round 12. Title partnership incoming On Wednesday (27 July), SABIC was announced as a new Principal Partner of Formula E which includes title sponsorship of the 2022 SABIC London E-Prix. The 2022 SABIC London E-Prix marks the beginning of a progressive partnership. By joining the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, SABIC has a unique platform to transfer innovations developed within Formula E to the broader automotive and EV industries, supporting the transition to EVs and a more sustainable future. Matt Scammell, Chief Commercial Officer, Formula E, commented: “We welcome this major multi-year partnership as further evidence of the growing appeal of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship to businesses, brands and corporations who are pushing the boundaries of innovation and sustainability on a global scale.” London's calling Formula E returns to the UK capital for a second race weekend in as many years since the series left its initial Battersea Park home in 2016 – a host location in both Seasons 1 and 2. You'd have to go back to 1972 for an F2 meeting at the now-disused Crystal Palace circuit. We're heading back to East London's historic docklands and the ExCeL exhibition centre and a circuit designed by British architect Simon Gibbons in collaboration with the FIA and Motorsport UK. It’s a unique challenge. The 2.141km, 22-turn track is tight and twisty with a slicker, less grippy surface indoors and asphalt outside, with plenty of elevation changes. Regen is high with the new-for-Season 8 chicane complex between Turns 10 and 13 replacing last year’s double hairpin, and there is plenty of opportunity for overtaking. Qualifying will be important, as ever, but there’s certainly room for manoeuvre. Fans will also get a chance to see the Gen3 car in the flesh for the first time in public, while trials rider Danny MacAskill, DJ & producer Jax Jones and music from Nina Nesbitt and Gracey will be providing the entertainment off-track in the Allianz E-Village fan zone alongside the Accelerate final in the gaming arena and more. Back the Brits! There will be a strong British presence both when the cars line-up on the grid at ExCeL London, and in the garages supporting them. Six of the 22 drivers will be competing on home soil with Sam Bird, Jake Dennis – a winner here last year - Alexander Sims, Oliver Turvey, Oliver Rowland and Dan Ticktum all hoping to score well on home soil, with a full complement of fans in the grandstands for the first time after COVID restrictions affected the Season 7 event. Bird won his home race in 2015 with the 35-year-old also the only one to have recorded victories in every Formula E season to-date, so far; although he is winless in Season 8. Nicolas Prost won races one and two at Battersea Park in 2016, with Dennis and Lynn victorious on Formula E’s first double-header in the docklands. London's sustainability drive London has set a goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050 and the city's Transport for London public transit authority by 2030, with the UK set to phase out sales of petrol and diesel vehicles entirely by 2035. In 2020, the country at large saw renewables make up the majority of its energy mix for the first time ever, at 43 per cent. The city now has some 6,000 EV chargers, and is set to expand its London Ultra Low Emission Zone this year. - PRO STOCK’S DALLAS GLENN LOOKING TO SHINE AT HOMETOWN TRACK DURING FLAVRPAC NHRA NORTHWEST NATIONALS
WIRE/NHRA KENT, Wash. (July 28, 2022) – After growing up racing at Pacific Raceways, Pro Stock’s Dallas Glenn will get the chance to race at the track for the first time as a professional driver during this weekend’s 33rd annual Flav-R-Pac NHRA Northwest Nationals. The reigning NHRA Rookie of the Year is part of the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series’ return to Seattle and it’s an event that means a great deal to Glenn. He raced in several family cars at the track growing up, moving into Stock in the sportsman ranks and in the first NHRA race back at the facility in three years, he’ll perform in front of family and friends in his RAD Torque Systems Chevrolet Camaro. That brings plenty of anticipation for Glenn, who is currently fifth in Pro Stock points, and while he’s thrilled to get the opportunity to race at Pacific Raceways, he’s determined to keep it business as usual to close out the three-race NHRA Western Swing. “There’s a lot of people around here that supported me, but it’s going to be a good time and I’m definitely excited to come here, race and take a Pro Stock car down the track,” Glenn said. “I’ve made a lot of laps here in a lot of different cars, and it’s going to be a lot of fun to do it in a Pro Stock car. Racing in front of a hometown crowd, it’s going to be really good, and it’s been great hearing about all the people around here that are fans. “We’ll have fun and I’ll enjoy seeing everyone, but when there’s a job to be done, you have to put your head down and work. It would be great to win, but if you can’t see yourself winning every race you go to, you probably need to reevaluate what you’re doing. You have to know you can go out there and do it.” Austin Prock (Top Fuel), John Force (Funny Car) and Matt Hartford (Pro Stock) won the race in 2019, the last time the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series raced at Pacific Raceways. This year’s race will be broadcast on both the FOX broadcast network and Fox Sports 1 (FS1), including live eliminations coverage starting at 4 p.m. ET on Sunday, July 31 on FOX. It is the 11th race of the 2022 Pro Stock season and Glenn, who is currently fifth in points, views this weekend as a chance to get his season rolling with the Countdown to the Championship quickly approaching. His year started in strong fashion, winning the Gatornationals in March, and advancing to the final round of the four-wide race in Vegas, but he’s only been to the semifinals once since then. It’s been a difficult Western Swing thus far, though Glenn saw some positives in Sonoma by qualifying fifth and picking up a round win. That’s a step in the right direction for Glenn and he is set on taking another step this weekend. Of course, nothing comes easy in Pro Stock, where Glenn has to deal with the likes of points leader Erica Enders, who continues to enjoy a dominant season, picking up her sixth win of the year last weekend in Sonoma. Others to watch include reigning world champ Greg Anderson, Denver winner Matt Hartford, who won the race in 2019, Aaron Stanfield, Kyle Koretsky, and rookie Camrie Caruso, but Glenn is determined to put on a show. “I feel pretty good about things,” said Glenn, who has four career wins. “Denver is always tough and totally different from anything we race at. At Sonoma, I felt like we did pretty well. All you can do is kind of chip away and the biggest thing is making improvements on our end. You need to take the ball into your own hands, put your head down and keep grinding. “We’ll keep picking away at it, try some little things and see how the car responds. It’s easy to dig yourself into a hole with these cars, so we just have to keep working. I do feel like I’ve gotten into a better spot than at the beginning of the year, but when the Countdown comes you have to make sure you’re on your ‘A’ game. Time is running out to get everything dialed in, so there is increased pressure that way.” Prock’s first career victory in the Top Fuel ranks came at Seattle during the 2019 race when he beat four-time defending world champ Steve Torrence in the final round. Prock will look to get back in the win column at Pacific Raceways, but it won’t be easy against the likes of teammate and points leader Brittany Force, who has four wins this season, Mike Salinas, another four-time race winner in 2022, Torrence, Justin Ashley, who has two wins this year, Antron Brown, and Tony Schumacher, who each have four wins at Seattle, Denver winner Leah Pruett, Doug Kalitta, and Josh Hart. In Funny Car, Force made history at Pacific Raceways in 2019 with his 150th career win. The 16-time Funny Car world champ enjoyed a memorable celebration after the historic win and the legendary driver returns to Seattle looking for his second win this season and the 10th in his career at the track. Nobody has won more than Force at Seattle, but he’ll face plenty of challenges against points leader Robert Hight, Tim Wilkerson, who has three wins in Seattle, defending world champ Ron Capps, Matt Hagan, J.R. Todd, Cruz Pedregon, Sonoma winner Bob Tasca III, and Alexis DeJoria. The event also will feature thrilling competition in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, which includes some of the sport’s top drivers, as well as Street Legal exhibition runs. A special cacklefest will take place on the return road after nitro qualifying on Friday and then in the nostalgia pits on Saturday. The race also features the NHRA Summit Racing Jr. Drag Racing League Shootout, with eight young drivers competing for the win. The final round will take place on Sunday and will be featured during the FOX broadcast. The Total Seal Tech Talk Engine Seminar takes place at Matt Hartford's Pro Stock Car Pit at 1 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday. Fans can also attend Nitro School at 12 p.m. on Saturday in Clay Millican’s pits to learn more about how the cars operate and reach their thrilling speeds. For autograph-seeking fans, they can attend an autograph session featuring Toyota drivers at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Toyota Display. Race fans at Pacific Raceways can enjoy the special pre-race ceremonies that introduce and celebrate each of the drivers racing for the prestigious Wally on Sunday and includes the fan favorite SealMaster Track Walk. The final can’t-miss experience of any NHRA event is the winner’s circle celebration on Sunday after racing concludes, where fans are invited to congratulate the Flav-R-Pac NHRA Northwest Nationals event winners. As always, fans also get an exclusive pit pass to the most powerful and sensory-filled motorsports attraction on the planet in Seattle. This unique opportunity gives fans a unique chance to see teams in action and service their hot rods between rounds, get autographs from their favorite NHRA drivers, and more. Fans can also visit NHRA’s popular Nitro Alley and Manufacturers Midway, where sponsors and race vendors create an exciting atmosphere that includes interactive displays, simulated competitions, merchandise, food, and fun for the entire family. The new Pep Boys midway display will include tire change challenges, oil change challenges, a slot car track, and much more, adding even more excitement to the midway. NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series qualifying will feature one round at 6:00 p.m. PT on Friday, July 29, and the final two rounds of qualifying on Saturday, July 30 at 1:15 and 4:00 p.m. Final eliminations are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. PT on Sunday, July 31. Television coverage includes qualifying action on FS1 at 2 p.m. ET on Saturday, 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, and then eliminations on FOX at 4 p.m. ET Sunday. - Verstappen wins as Ferrari mistakes continue: Hungarian Grand Prix Race Review.
(Image via @Max33Verstappen) As Max Verstappen picked up his eighth win of the 2022 Formula One World Championship en route to a potential back-to-back championship seasons. The once formidable foe of the Scuderia Ferrari took another disastrous blow to their title hopes. As I slept on writing this review until the day after, I have to believe that whatever the Ferrari team is actually thinking is either the team is this inept in race strategy and have no idea what they are doing. Or, bad luck keeps striking this team. With twenty-four hours of thought after the Hungarian Grand Prix, it would feel like this team is truly inept and it's unfortunate that the title chase is seemingly slipping away. The reason I believe that the Scuderia is inept in it's strategy is the ultimate blunder of the lap thirty-nine pit stop that saw the switch to hard tires. Before the race took place, Pirelli releases the optimal tire strategy for a given race weekend. According to Pirelli, the fastest tire strategy was soft tires until lap 16 or 21, medium till lap 42 or 47, then mediums to the end. The strategy that Ferrari used was medium to begin, lap 40 stop for hards, and a lap 55 stop with softs to the end of the race. This information is public knowledge and given to all teams before a race weekend. In their eyes, the hard compound tire was 1.4 seconds slower than the soft tire and was not put into any of their predicted strategy before the race. Even Martin Brundle of the Formula One commentary team even said during the broadcast that the hard tires wouldn't even be in question to be used because they were so slow in terms of pace that they would offer no strategic advantage to any team....unless their goal was to lose the race. Which is even more unfortunate that Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen were virtually identical in pace. What Ferrari did without a shadow of a doubt was that the team panicked when Red Bull pitted for medium compound tires. What they should have done was to be confident in the strategy and go with the soft compound at the end. Remember, Verstappen went over thirty laps on the medium compound towards the end and even spun coming out of turn twelve in route to a win. This gets more depressing when in the cooldown room, we saw Hamilton, Verstappen, and Russell laugh openly about the strategy of them even touching the hard tires towards the end of the race. As for the race winner, it was a fantastic drive by Verstappen. Coming from tenth and even spinning late in the race. It seemed like every thing was going against him at the end. In details that came after the race, the Verstappen power unit was three laps away from a terminal failure. From this point on, Verstappen does not have to win another race in 2022 to claim his second championship if he just finishes on the podium. If this pace continues, Verstappen will lock up a championship as the checkered flag waves in Suzuka later this year. For Lewis Hamilton, he had his fifth podium in a row as Mercedes had both drivers finishing on the podium for the second weekend in a row. It begs the question on can Mercedes finish ahead of Ferrari in the constructors standings by the end of the year would be a very fantastic goal for them by Abu Dhabi. Mercedes has a car that has been over a second off the pace of the Red Bull and Ferrari this year and is essentially doing more with less than any other team on the grid. If Hamilton did not have his DRS issue during the race and passing being a main issue during the race, it would not have been out of the question that he could have had a win in Hungary. Moving back towards the midfield and looking ahead to the second half of the season is the battle between McLaren and Alpine in the constructors standings. The gap between the two only being four points with Alpine having the advantage. For McLaren, the brightest bulb in the box has to be Lando Norris. For Norris, it was his 10th points finish in 13 races so far this season and has brought 76 points for the team so far as Ricciardo has 19. For Alpine, Ocon has 58 points while Alonso adds 41 to the team total. If Ricciardo does better, we can see a battle toward the end of the season for the title of "best of the rest." A lot more thoughts on the first half of the season will be talked about during the summer break has teams have nearly a month off before a championship battle heats up. Next for Formula One is the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps on August 28th. Listen to "Early Apex" as we go more in depth on this race and other stories around the Formula One paddock this Thursday.
- Rossi snaps winless drought at Indianapolis
(Via @NAPARacing) It's been 1,133 days since Alexander Rossi has been atop the NTT IndyCar Series podium as he took the win at the Gallagher Grand Prix at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Saturday. To be honest, ever since Rossi announced that he would be leaving Andretti Autosport to Arrow McLaren SP in 2023, Rossi has been having fantastic runs since June 1st, with him having three podium finishes in seven races. Even though he has had bad luck and run-ins with current teammates since then, no driver has impressed me more than Rossi. For Rossi, he still can make the argument that he still belongs in the series and got a major monkey off his back as he looks on to finish his time with Andretti. The main struggle with Rossi's dominate win was the issue with Colton Herta as he struck a curb and had a transmission issue at lap 42 in which Rossi assumed the lead and never looked back. Another feel good story in the race was Christian Lundgaard getting his first podium in the NTT IndyCar Series with a second place finish. In the past six races, Lundgaard has finished inside the top ten as he looks to be running away with the 2022 Rookie of the Year title. Will Power assumed the points lead over 2022 Indianapolis 500 champion Marucs Ericcson at the end of the race with a third place finish. The gap is only nine points between the two with only four races left in the 2022 season but in terms of championship contenders only 81 points separate Will Power and Scott McLaughlin with seven drivers having a mathematical possibility of winning a championship at seasons end. In all honesty, it was not the best race of the season so far and it certainly wasn't the worst race either as you had exciting racing through the midfield of this race. Although this race did have massive implications on the hunt for the 2022 Astor Cup My only beef with the race was that the series should never play second-fiddle to the NASCAR Xfinity Series, especially in Indianapolis where IndyCar is king. To me, as a motorsports fan it is nice to see the top two series in America be together in a doubleheader style weekend. The big caveat is that in a pecking order, I will concede the Cup Series should be top billing with IndyCar right behind them if it was any other weekend. In my mind, a perfect doubleheader weekend would be at a place like Nashville. Where the IndyCar Series has the race downtown and NASCAR takes the Fairgrounds Speedway. Where both series show their absolute strengths and neither take any thing away from each other. The IndyCar Series returns this weekend as the series returns to Nashville for the second running of the Nashville Grand Prix. - NCS Race Recap: Tyler Reddick fashions convincing win in dramatic NASCAR Cup race at the Brickyard
Photo: AJ Appeal July 31, 2022 By Reid Spencer NASCAR Wire Service SPEEDWAY, Ind. – The NASCAR Cup Series has a new road course conqueror. Tyler Reddick survived a wild overtime battle against Ross Chastain—who, as it turned out, was under penalty for finagling the first corner—to win Sunday’s Verizon 200 at the Brickyard. Reddick’s NASCAR Cup Series victory at the 2.439-mile, 14-turn Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course was his second this month, the second of his career and his second at a road course. There was one fundamental difference between Reddick’s win at the Brickyard and his victory on July 3 at Road America. Between the two triumphs, Reddick announced he would leave Richard Childress Racing for 23XI Racing after the 2023 season. But Reddick proved on Sunday that lame ducks can still go fast. “Well, we just know what we’re capable of, and we did that at Road America,” said Reddick, who led a race-high 38 laps on Sunday. “Certainly, (the announcement) was a little bump in the road, but we went out and won a race fair and square a couple weeks ago, and if we change nothing, we keep working really, really hard, we find a way back to Victory Lane. “Just really glad to be able to do it here in Indianapolis. This is one really special place to race, and really excited to kiss the bricks here in a little bit and really excited we got (sponsor) 3CHI their win in their hometown.” After a multicar melee in Turn 1 sent the race to overtime and dashed the hopes of Chase Elliott, who had restarted second beside Reddick on Lap 80, Reddick lined up beside AJ Allmendinger for the overtime restart. Lining up fifth on Lap 85, Chastain steered wide on the restart and opted for the access road beyond the corner. He returned to the track after swapping the lead with Reddick throughout the first lap of overtime. Reddick was shocked to see Chastain’s unorthodox strategy. “I was like, ‘Uh-oh,’” Reddick said. “But that was a scenario that had been talked about. If you get bottled up, what do you do? Take the access road. I couldn’t believe he got ahead of me. I was kind of waiting to see if he was going to have a penalty, because I didn’t want to move him out of the way and make his race worse than what it was. “Yeah, I was really surprised by that, but, hey, we made it work. Hats off to Ross for trying to do that, but really glad it didn’t end up working out, because I’d have been pretty pissed off.” NASCAR frowned on Chastain’s artifice and assessed a 30-second penalty that dropped him to 27th at the finish, elevating DAYTONA 500 winner Austin Cindric to the runner-up spot. “Just trying not to be in the chaos there in Turn 1,” Chastain said. “I thought we were four-wide, and couldn’t go any farther right, and decided to take the NASCAR access lane out there. “Just pure reaction there, for our Worldwide Express Chevy. I took it in practice on exit, overshooting Turn 1… Yeah, just wanted to not get hit, and merged back on where I merged.” Harrison Burton came home third, followed by Todd Gilliland and Bubba Wallace. The results were career bests for Burton and Gilliland, and with Cindric, it marked the first time since 1994 at Pocono that three rookies have finished in the top five in a Cup race. (The three rookies at Pocono were Joe Nemechek and Jeff Burton and Ward Burton, Harrison Burton’s father and uncle respectively.) Despite a multitude of early spins, the first caution for an accident in Sunday’s race didn’t come until Lap 62, and it set the stage for the chaos that followed. After green-flag pit stops, Reddick had built a lead of more than three seconds over Christopher Bell when Kyle Larson’s Chevrolet hurtled out of control into Turn 1 and blindsided the Chevy of Ty Dillon with a bone-jarring impact. The resulting caution tightened the field and set up a restart on Lap 65 with Reddick in the lead and Bell beside him in the outside lane and Ryan Blaney trailing in third. The outside lane on that restart and the two that followed proved to be anathema for the drivers running second. Bell was shuffled back on the Lap 65 restart and ultimately caused the fourth caution with a blown right front tire that spread debris on the track. Chase Elliott, who was tracking Reddick before that yellow, spun in a three-wide sandwich in Turn 1 with Blaney and William Byron on the Lap 80 restart. And defending race winner AJ Allmendinger, who had driven his No. 16 Chevrolet to second despite a malfunctioning cool suit, was forced wide on the overtime restart and dropped to seventh at the finish. Blaney also was a victim of the final restart, spinning in Turn 1 and finishing 26th after spending the majority of the afternoon in the top five and leading 17 laps, tied for second most with Bell. That mishap cost Blaney a chance to put more distance in the standings between himself and Martin Truex Jr. Blaney and Truex are 15th and 16th, respectively, in the Playoff standings with four races left in the regular season. After Sunday’s race, Blaney leads Truex by 25 points. –30– NASCAR Cup Series Race – 29th Annual Verizon 200 at the Brickyard Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course Indianapolis, Indiana Sunday, July 31, 2022 (1) Tyler Reddick, Chevrolet, 86. - Grant Enfinger charges to win in first NASCAR Truck Series Playoff race
Photo Courtesy Justin Casterline / Getty Images NASCAR WIRE July 29, 2022 By Reid Spencer NASCAR Wire Service Grant Enfinger picked a fine time to win his first race of the season. Charging to the front on fresh tires after the TSport 200 went to overtime on Friday night, Enfinger passed Zane Smith for the lead on Lap 206 of 207 and went on to win the first event in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Playoff. In the return of the series to Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park for the first time since 2011, Enfinger beat runner-up Ben Rhodes to the finish line by .477. Rhodes passed Smith on the final lap to secure the second spot. With his first victory since 2020 and the seventh of his career, Enfinger gained automatic advancement to the second round of the Playoffs after a regular season that saw a lackluster performance by his GMS Racing team and a reunion with veteran crew chief Jeff Hensley before the July 9 race at Mid-Ohio. It was Hensley who brought Enfinger to pit road for a tire change after Carson Hocevar knocked Colby Howard into the outside wall on Lap 191 of 200. That call proved decisive. “We’ve just been off a little bit as an organization,” Enfinger said. “We’ve been working so hard because we’ve been sucking. It hurts to say it, but we’ve had a terrible season to this point. But we had a great Chevrolet all day. “It felt like every time we got into the lead, a caution came out, and it put Hensley in a bad spot. I knew from experience to just trust his gut.” Zane Smith held third in a finish that was not without controversy. The Playoff’s top seed entering the race, Smith had crowded Chandler Smith into the outside wall earlier in the event, damaging both trucks. Zane Smith also sustained damage in a three-truck incident involving Lawless Allen and Chase Purdy, but he brought his No. 38 Ford to pit road for fresh tires on Lap 156 and worked his way forward over the closing 40 laps. On the final restart on Lap 206, Zane Smith pinched eventual 10th-place finisher John Hunter Nemechek into the outside wall and took the top spot until Enfinger made the winning pass. It was Nemechek, though, who sent the race to overtime when he spun race leader Taylor Gray in Turn 3 on Lap 199 of a scheduled 200. Nemechek insisted the accident was unintentional. “Sometimes you’re the bug and sometimes you’re the windshield, and tonight we were the bug,” said Nemechek, who led a race-high 75 laps and won the first stage. “I made a mistake early on and spun myself, and we had a restart there at the end on old tires. “Everybody had fresher tires. I tried driving down in the bottom of (Turn) 3 underneath the 17 (Gray), and I just kept sliding and accidentally got into his left rear. I tried to stay off him. That team has their opinion, I have my opinion, and I’m sure we’ll talk at some point.” Playoff driver Stewart Friesen finished fourth behind Zane Smith, followed by Corey Heim, Tyler Ankrum and Layne Riggs. Playoff drivers Ty Majeski, Matt Crafton and Nemechek completed the top 10. Those results left Crafton and 16th-place finisher Christian Eckes seven points below the current cut line. After the third race of the first round, the Playoff field will be trimmed from 10 drivers to eight. Hocevar is eighth in the standings, seven points to the good. –30– NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Race – Inaugural TSport 200 Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park Indianapolis, Indiana Friday, July 29, 2022 (5) Grant Enfinger (P), Chevrolet, 207. - NXS Race Recap: AJ Allmendinger scores dominant win in Pennzoil 150 at the Brickyard
Photo: AJ Appeal July 30, 2022 By Reid Spencer NASCAR Wire Service SPEEDWAY, Ind. – The NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoff is still six races away, but AJ Allmendinger has already clinched one title. With his victory in Saturday’s Pennzoil 150 at the Brickyard, the driver of the No. 16 Kaulig Racing Chevrolet is the undisputed King of the Road. Allmendinger was an irresistible force at the 2.439-mile, 14-turn Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course. He led 42 of the 62 laps and overcame a fraught 25-second pit stop that dropped him from the lead to 13th for a restart on Lap 19. The victory was Allmendinger’s third of the season—all on road courses—and his fourth win in the last five Xfinity Series races on circuits that turn right as well as left, dating to his triumph in last year’s fall event at the Charlotte Roval. Allmendinger passed runner-up Alex Bowman for the lead after a restart on Lap 45, staying alongside Bowman’s No. 17 Chevrolet though Turn 1 and pulling clear through Turn 2. Allmendinger crossed the finish line 2.084 seconds ahead of the Hendrick Motorsports driver. “God, I love this place,” exclaimed Allmendinger, who won last year’s NASCAR Cup Series race at the vaunted Brickyard and will defend that victory in Sunday’s Verizon 200 (2:30 p.m. ET on NBC, IMS Radio and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio). “I knew Bowman was really good at the long runs, and so I tried to gap him as much as I could. God, I love Indy!” Allmendinger lost track position on the Lap 16 pit stop when his crew had difficulty changing the right rear tire. But the 40-year-old driver from Los Gatos, Calif., fought through traffic and advanced to third for a restart on Lap 29. He went three-wide to the inside on that restart and had the lead as he exited Turn 1. “We gave up stage points a little bit there as well, to the guys we’re fighting for points,” Allmendinger said. “But you know what? Points don’t mean a damn thing—we’re kissing the bricks. Hell, yeah!” Bowman began to cut into Allmendinger’s lead late in the final 18-lap run green-flag run but ran out of time. “I probably was a little too nice on that last restart,” said Bowman, who was running his first Xfinity Series race since 2018. “I knew he was going to be better than us firing off… At the end, we were definitely running him down—just not enough laps.” Justin Allgaier passed Ross Chastain on the final lap to secure third place, with Chastain holding fourth. Chase Briscoe came home fifth, followed by Riley Herbst, Sam Mayer, Ty Gibbs, Austin Hill and Noah Gragson. Gragson won the first stage of the race and fellow JR Motorsports driver Josh Berry claimed victory in Stage 2. - IMSA Battle on the Bricks BringsWeatherTech Championship Back to IMS
Press Release / Indianapolis Motor Speedway / IMSA INDIANAPOLIS (Friday, July 29, 2022) – IMSA is returning to famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway. For the first time since 2014, the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship will be back at the Racing Capital of the World on the weekend of Sept. 15-17, 2023, as the headline event of a full weekend of IMSA sports car action billed as the “IMSA Battle on the Bricks” around the 14-turn, 2.439-mile road course. The two-hour, 40-minute WeatherTech Championship event will be held on Sunday, Sept. 17 with live NBC network television coverage. “Indianapolis Motor Speedway is hallowed ground in the world of motorsport, and we are honored to bring IMSA and the WeatherTech Championship back to IMS,” IMSA President John Doonan said. “There has been mutual interest and many conversations between IMSA and IMS leadership for quite some time to bring our brand of premium endurance sports car racing back to the Speedway and our collective fans. As we launch an exciting new era in 2023 and introduce GTP as our top category of prototypes alongside many of our other successful categories and sanctioned series, the timing is right for a full weekend of IMSA action in Indianapolis and on NBC next fall.” In addition to Sunday’s WeatherTech Championship race, the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge will headline the action on Saturday, Sept. 16 with a four-hour, bumper-to-bumper traffic jam of production-based race cars. The weekend also will include other IMSA-sanctioned single-make series to be announced later. “Our reputation as the Racing Capital of the World will be further enhanced by the IMSA Battle on the Bricks, as IMSA will join the major series competing at IMS in 2023,” IMS President J. Douglas Boles said. “IMSA features some of the most evocative manufacturers and machines in global motorsports, so a return to IMS is a perfect fit for our loyal fans. We can’t wait to see exciting new GTP prototypes compete on the road course in yet another full weekend of action at the Speedway, complete with great racing in other classes and the Michelin Pilot Challenge.” The IMSA Battle on the Bricks weekend will be a three-day festival showcasing the pinnacle of sports car racing. With 18 different manufacturers currently competing in IMSA and unparalleled fan access to the garage area throughout the weekend, race fans in the IMS infield can get up close and personal with their favorite sports cars, drivers and teams. Fans also will be able to camp in the IMS infield, access not available during any other race weekend. Powered and primitive spaces will be available to purchase throughout the infield for public camping. Add in IMSA’s signature pre-race Fan Walk – allowing all fans in attendance the opportunity to roam the starting grid moments before the command is given to start engines – prior to the WeatherTech Championship and Michelin Pilot Challenge races, and it will be a can’t-miss weekend for race fans. The WeatherTech Championship race marks the return of top-level IMSA competition to the Speedway for the first time since 2014, when co-drivers Christian Fittipaldi and Joao Barbosa claimed the Brickyard Grand Prix victory for Action Express Racing in their No. 5 Corvette Daytona Prototype. The first IMSA race at the Speedway was a three-hour GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series event in 2012 won by Starworks Motorsport co-drivers Alex Popow and Sebastien Bourdais. Looking forward, IMSA will return to IMS in 2024 and 2025, as well, for longer endurance races. Fans who purchase race tickets or infield camping in 2023 will have first access to secure those spots for the 2024 IMSA endurance race.
